River, with a stack of DVDs in her hand, slips into the common room. Might as well get some familiarity with these 80s movies before she shows them the night after tomorrow, right? She glances at the titles in her hand, then selects one, pops it into the player, and settles into a chair with the remote.

Real Genius, hmmm?

She hits play, and the strains of Carmen McRae singing fill the room.

Anders comes in and, as usual, flops down on a couch, since the Perkolator was closed today.

"What's playing?"

"Real Genius. I'm hoping they'll get bored and move on to 'Better off Dead'. Popcorn?"

"We can play that one next." River reaches over and picks up the case for Better Off Dead. "Hey... why does this guy look like you?"

"Beats the hell out of me. I'm still freaked out over that guy who's working at the record store. I figure it's just some Fandom High deal."

"Multidimensional and all that?" River nods. "Most likely, yeah. I'm kind of surprised I haven't met myself coming around a corner yet. It's weird enough, with music and culture drawn from half a dozen or more chrono-locales.

"There's a record store in town?" She looks intrigued. "Where is it? I didn't see anything of the sort when I went in to Aphrod-- um, when I went into town earlier."

Maia leans over and says in a low voice "Do they have handcuffs there?"

River leans over to whisper back. "They opened a new retail branch, I think... called Pandora's Box. I'll take you in there tomorrow, OK?" Then she backs up the conversation, looking at Maia, and her voice gets ever-so slightly louder. "Handcuffs?"

Marty heard all their whispers and considers heading toward his bunk.

"Hey, thanks." Anders grabs a handful of popcorn and crunches away at it, watching the screen with a confused expression. "Man, I'm so lost here."

"Oh what's to know. College students build giant laser as part of a government plot to build a space deployed weapon for assassination attempt. Plus... Beauticians.

"Beauticians?" She looks back at the screen. "I guess we are. Awwww, poor kid... someone needs to take him by the hand and -- yes! Girl genius to the rescue!"

"Although... that's got to be the most unusual rebreather assembly I've ever seen."

"What do expect? This is the 80's. Uh-oh. Looks like Mitch just got reamed and now there's no more beautician fun."

"And he's... oh, gods. Poor kid. My parents weren't understanding either, kind of like that. And... oh, I am really beginning to dislike that Kent guy." River scowls at the screen. "What a piece of go se!"

River reaches into the bowl and grabs a handful for herself, just barely brushing Anders' hand as it exits.

It's some sort of mythical, primitive weapon story. I don't think it's in the scrolls, but it's entertaining.

"Sort of, I think. There's some important guys in a shadowy room, part of their government I think, who want this weapon for their own purposes. See, that guy there? The one who's talking to the professor and claiming that fraud is a felony? He's with them."

"I think it has to do with the 80s in general. That's what I've read, anyways. Very strange garments, like legwarmers and lycra and unusual hairdoes."

"Well, yeah." River shrugs and makes an isn't that obvious? face. "That's what governments do mostly, isn't it? Get in a person's way, tell you what to do and where to go and how to do whatever it is you really want to?"
