In the third floor common room

For the second night in a row, Rory wanders into the third floor common room (with another stack of flyers and coffee in hand) and flips on the TV.

However, it's fairly obvious from the rapid pace she's flipping through the channels that she's not really all that focused on the television.

"Means you're making at least one hundred thou a year, which yes, is a lot of money. It's a way of being vague about earning more annually than most people see in five."

Parker stubs out a cigarette, and counts how many she has left. "Six to go. Think I can make them last until results are in?"

Alanna shrugged. "Never smoked, so I wouldn't know. A couple friends of mine did, drove me crazy. Still does." Alanna glares pointedly at Miss Parker. She works the numbers over in her head. "I think that's more money than their Majesties see in a life time."

"Yeah, well, I'll be making all of you crazy in entirely *new* ways as I try to kick this habit." Parker look surprised. "Really? Hunh. I'm afraid I'm the wrong person to ask. That's the lowest salary anyone at my father's company gets paid per year, unless they're an intern."

Alanna shrugged. "Different worlds, different money systems. I'm rather at the top of the 'food chain'. My family is as nobel as they get, both my parents. That's how I even had the opportunity to be train as a Knight. Only nobels are allowed to. So I'm pretty well off." She smiles at a thought. "Ironically, even if I had not gone to the palace to train, I would have still crossed paths with all of my friends."

"Ah." Parker's eyes narrow in thought. "We have a few nobles left here, as well as royalty. But power is in the hands of the politicians, and the money-makers." She shrugs. "My family deals with both."

Parker cocks her head. "Sir Alanna?"

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2005-10-11 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
"We've got those too, the politicians and money-makers that is." She shook her head. "It used to be Alanna of Trebond, became Page Alan and is now Squire Alan. Had I stuck to the whole proper girl thing it would have been Lady Alanna. Sir Alanna/Alan are still in the future."

"Why are they so against women being knights? If you can do the job, you should get the title." Parker looked impatient. "Ability is everything. Not gender."

Alanna snorted. "Miss Parker, have you read your own history? Women were always second class. Women are too delicate for Knighthood, they're too emotional. They're not strong enough." Alanna scowls. "I know 'ladies' who are better with a knife than half my fellow Squire's."

Parker snarls, then counts her cigarettes again. "It's *bullshit*. Just because we got stuck with the baby-making for nine months. Thank god for birth control." She shakes her head, and calms down. "And their were always exceptions here, too. Half the ninjas trained in Japan were geishas, able to infiltrate and assasinate because of who they were. Buddhist nuns perfected wing chun in order to avoid being attacked on crusade. Half the condotierri bandits in Italy were female. Christ, I hate that they don't teach this stuff up front."

"I hope you make Security Officer, and I hope you make knight. Make them kiss your ass and apologize after you succeed."

((...I know a guy named Wing Chun, does that mean something interesting?))

Alanna laughed. "I have no idea who any of those people were, but I'll take your word for it. And thanks Miss Parker."

[ooc: Everlasting Spring -- according to the internet.]

"You're welcome." Parker sighs. "Maybe there *is* a reason most of the people I wanted to work with are female, after all...."

((ooc: He is being called that now.))

"Women are cool." Alanna glances at the clock and sighs.

(ooc: I love name meanings and often call people by them instead of their real names. Drives 'em crazy for some reason.*g*))
