South Attic after the JA meeting - locked between Beka and Bel

After a very...interesting...JA meeting, Beka and Bel wanted somewhere private to talk. Upon discussion, Bel shimmered them to the door of South Attic. Her stomach twisted and she felt a bit green, but all in all, it wasn't too much worse than her first slipstream. In time she might get used to it.

Beka keyed the wards and let them in. Not seeing her roommates, but not wanting to be disturbed, she led him into her bedroom and shut the door.

"Past is past," Beka said firmly. "And future..." She sighed. "Is also past." She holds up a hand to stop the conversation from veering off that direction. "My issue. Another time. For now...don't be so certain. I get along with Angelus, don't I? ~~He can't break your heart if you only give him your body.~~"

Belthazor gave Beka a questioning look, but kept silent about her cryptic words. "Maybe the past can be forgiven," he said, "but what if I have to kill someone close to her? What if I get told to kill her? Maybe it won't happen, but...it could. ~~But giving him my body would still upset Phoebe. Besides, he's stingy with the courtesy reach-around.~~"

"Have to? The choice will always be yours Bel. Always." Her tone was sharp, but her expression was sympathetic. "Wait until that day. Trust me. Don't try to decide now because you just can't know."

Inhaling, then tapping the ash off her cigarette, Beka pauses. "It won't be an easy choice. Truth, I love Phoebe and I'd have to try to kill you if you tried to hurt her. But some part of me...would understand why you did it."

~~Funny. He was quite generous with me. Maybe you make him work too hard for it to begin with. (Phoebe, don't kill me, please! Angelus, you owe me.)~~

Belthazor nodded gravely. "I wouldn't expect any less from you. If for some reason I was trying to hurt her...part of me would want you to stop me. It's not that easy to do, though. You can hurt me, but finishing me off takes something special."

Beka smirked at that. "I am something special. And if that's not enough, I'd wager a pulse cannon could set you back awhile." She nodded, serious again. "I'd rather disable you than kill you anyhow."

"See, now you shouldn't tell me that," Belthazor said. "Now I know you won't be shooting to kill." He flashed a grin at Beka, knowing she actually would if she had to.

Beka grinned back. "I tell you that in all confidence. First, I wouldn't kill you if I had a choice. Second, you and I both know damned well that I am capable, if it comes to it. But it won't. Will it?" There might be a note of something like 'please' in her voice, as she stubs out the neverending cigarette.

"I hope not," he said quietly, grinding out his own cigarette. "Anyway. So. You don't think Angelus has anything personal against Phoebe? I don't have to worry about keeping them as far apart as possible? ~~Except in Ethics because they're on the same team and it scares me.~~"

Beka took a moment to consider the question, to be sure her answer wasn't impulse. Finally she shook her head. "No. I don't think Angelus has an axe to grind against Phoebe. ~~He's jealous of her.~~ I think he wants you to be happy. Whole. Yourself, whatever that is." With a grim smile, she offered him this promise: "Phoebe will be safe." ~~Angelus is no fool. He'd never hurt her in public, even if he were of a mind to hurt her. Which I don't believe he is.~~

"I doubt," Belthazor said, equally grimly, "that it's 'whatever that is.' He and Phoebe are like magnetic opposites. The human in me wants to be with Phoebe. The demon in me wants to do be like Angelus." He sighed, then chuckled. "The human thing to do would be to apologize to him, but that would be weakness to a demon. So I guess I just act like it didn't happen."

"It'd be a weakness in a human, too." Beka smiled. "It's not always the worst thing, but right now? I'd work on damping down the emo around him." She waved a hand idly. "You know how he hates ~~cuddling~~ mush."

Belthazor nodded. "I can do that. ~~I can always just look at Lee Adama and be so appalled it completely kills the emo in me.~~."

"You... uh, hell, how do I ask if you're all right without riling you?" she asked, amusement lacing her voice.

"Just asking is fine," he said, amused as well. "I'm fine, I guess. Well, confused. But...yeah, that's normal."

"Confused is a way of life." Beka laughed dryly. "I usually fudge and call it gray."

Belthazor nodded with a small half-smile. "I should probably get going," he said. "I want to check on Phoebe and see if she's gotten any more flowers." He paused for a moment, then added in the tone of someone not used to saying the words, "Umm, thanks."

~~The concept terrifies me, yet oddly amuses me.~~

Beka inclined her head in acknowledgment, in the posture of someone uncomfortable with gratitude. "Anytime."

~~It has a certain ironic appeal.~~
