Fourth Floor Common Room

Belthazor lounged on the fourth floor common room couch, idly flipping through the channels on the TV. He'd been avoiding the Parents' Weekend goings-on for the most part, as if pretending they weren't happening meant that Raynor and his mother weren't going to be showing up. So far, so good. Maybe they'd forgotten. Maybe something had come up, the Source had given them orders at the last minute.

Then he felt a familiar chilling tingle which meant another demon was nearby. Two, as a matter of fact. Two he recognized. Damn.

"Or perhaps you've been wasting your time with other things," Elizabeth said. She moved closer to her son, and her expression turned to one of displeasure. "I smell vampire," she said. "All over him."

Raynor looked at Belthazor sternly. "A vampire? Is this true?"

"There are vampires at the school and in the town," Belthazor said carefully. "They're not from our world. They don't serve the vampire queen. One of them lives down the hall from me here. We've played worked together a few times."

Raynor was not pleased with this bit of information. "I don't care where these vampires are from. Working with them is forbidden."

"What do you expect from a pathetic half-breed?" Elizabeth sneered. "I should've killed him when I wanted to rather than let him live this charade as a shadow of a demon. He'll never amount to anything."

Belthazor twitched. His mother's words weren't unfamiliar to him at all. He rarely saw her, but when he did, she never failed to remind him of her disgust for the half-human child she had given birth to. No matter how hard he tried, no matter how many deeds he accomplished for for Raynor or the Source, it was never enough in her eyes. For the most part, he didn't care.

"You taught me to make allies where I could, Raynor," he said coldly. "And it's not like I'm trusting Angelus with the secrets of the Underworld. We work well together and I'm not going to rule out a powerful ally because of something he had no part in."

Raynor took that into consideration. "I suppose, since this vampire does not serve the queen, I will let it slide. As for finding witches? Try harder. Now, tell me about your studies."

"I hate taking classes," Belthazor grumbled. "I mean, when am I ever going to use this stuff? I'd rather be back in the Underworld learning how to fight and use my powers." He sighed. "I'm doing okay I guess. I'm doing pretty good in the Sociology of Deviance, Manipulation, Myth, and Magic, and Arthurian Traditions. And I'm doing okay in History and Advanced Negotiations. And I started taking Ethics and I'm doing okay there, too." He purposely left out bio.

"'Pretty good'?" Elizabeth echoed. "And you call yourself a member of the Brotherhood? Those of the Thorn are expected to excel in everything they do, no matter how tedious." She shook her head. "This is pointless, Raynor. Why are you wasting your time on him?"

Raynor turned toward Elizabeth starting to grow tired of her complaining. "I believe Belthazor has great potential."

He turned his attention back to Belthazor. "I trust you won't let me down."

"Of course not," Belthazor said. "I'm honored with the faith you and the Source have in me. I won't disappoint you except by having a witch as my girlfriend and a vampire as my BFF/fuckbuddy."

"I'm in room 412," Belthazor said. "This floor. I'll be ready when you are."

He breathed a sigh of relief when his mother and Raynor shimmered out of the room. Just had to get through the next day without them running into Phoebe. Or him thinking about Phoebe. Or any witches. Or vampires.

He was so dead.
