Christmas Eve, Second Floor Common Room

Sam sat in the common room, idly flipping through channels. No specials were on, and there was only so long she could watch the Yule log. She sipped occasionally from a glass of red wine.

She was trying very, very hard not to think of her father.

Sam grinned at Janet and poured a glass of wine for her, then slipped the id into her jeans. "Thanks. This'll fit in perfectly with my New Year's resolution. I'm saving your gift so I have stuff to open tomorrow."

"What's your New Year's resolution?" asked Janet.

"To be less of a rule follower," she said, solemnly.

Janet snickered. "You made a New Year's resolution to be less of a rule follower?" she asked. "Do you have a set of guidelines on how to follow the rules less and exactly how you want to break them?"

Sam stuck her tongue out at Janet. "Not yet. It's not New Year's."

"Not yet?" Janet shook her head. "Sam, you're hopeless. You're devising a set of rules on how to break the rules."

"It's an illness." Sam nodded, solemnly. "I think I need to be reprogrammed by someone whose father wasn't a General in the Air Force."
