Christmas Eve, Second Floor Common Room

Sam sat in the common room, idly flipping through channels. No specials were on, and there was only so long she could watch the Yule log. She sipped occasionally from a glass of red wine.

She was trying very, very hard not to think of her father.

"I heard something about that," she says, though she doesn't know much and doesn't want to encourage any bad moods. "I hope it works out."

Marty takes a deep breath and forces a grin. "Well... One way or the other it will. I guess I just have to have a little faith. Supposed to be the season for it."

"Right," she nods, and reminds him, "No emo. I will beat it out of anyone if I have to."

Marty laughs. "Right! Gotcha... I'll be a happy camper. Honest! Just give me a television yule log, endless booze and cigars and I'll call it a cheerful evening."

"Two of those things we have right here though... watching wood burning on a television is just odd."

"I've always found the tradition a little bizarre. I prefer the real wood thing myself."

Marty looks around the dorm thoughtfully.

"Do we have a fireplace around here someplace?"

"Not that I know of," Aeryn says slowly, looking at him in something akin to the early stages of horror. "Tell me you're not planning on burning things."

Marty holds up his hands in a complacent manner. "Hey, I'm just asking a question. I'm not planning on setting the building on fire or anything," Marty says with a smirk.

"Sorry. Habit," she explains. "I always have to check."

Marty yawns and drowsily gets to his feet. "And at this point me playing with fire is probably a bad idea. Time for this boy to get some sleep. 'Night Aeryn."
