Second Floor Common Room (starting in the late afternoon and continuing into evening)

Rory had streamers and glitter and a newly-made, orange-and-white banner that read "HAPPY BIRTHDAY CALLY."

But Rory is not that tall. So she was having a bit of trouble hanging up the banner and streamers.

Well. She was having trouble inasmuch as she was being more flaily than usual.

Anders leans over and gives her a quick hug. "You rock so much," he says, reaching for his wallet. "This is way more than I hoped for, and I really feel bad about dumping this on you so last-minute. How much do I owe you for the streamers and everything?"

Rory raised a brow, blinking. "You don't owe me anything. Seriously. Put the wallet away. It was fun."

"You sure?" Anders fidgets and looks guilty. "I feel bad. I just dumped that on you without any warning or anything."

"Anders? If I'd known in advance, I would've done it anyway," Rory assured him.

He breaks out into a huge grin at that. "And that, Gilmore, is why you rock. Seriously. Thanks for bein' such a good friend to Cally. And to me."

She blushed, scuffing a foot along the ground. "Seriously, it's not a big deal," she said, shrugging and smiling.

"Is too." Anders might just have made up his mind to be a stubborn little brat on this point.

"Okay. Fine." Rory turned redder. "But I was happy to do it." She glanced over at Cally. "Does she like it? I can't tell."

Anders gives her another hug. "I think so, yeah. I think she just wasn't expecting it. She's totally not used to having actual birthday parties, just something low-key with her family." He follows Rory's glance and smiles. "She might be a little embarrassed, though. 'cause of the attention."

"I'm glad I didn't get her the boa and the crown, then," Rory said thoughtfully. "But she seemed okay when I talked to her. Little wary of the attention, yeah. But it's not like we have a billion people here, 'cause of the game night and all."

"Aw, frak, I didn't mean to keep you from that." A guilty look crosses Anders's face. "She'll be okay, though. It's probably a good thing we didn't have, like, a room full of people. Next year, though? Definitely planning a big party for her, all in advance, 'cause eighteen. That's big, right?"

Rory waved a hand. "S'okay, I suck at Monopoly anyway. I'll go when they have Scrabble."

Her smile might have widened slightly at that, for some reason.

"And eighteen's big here 'cause it means legality for a lot of things, yeah."

The Scrabble thing? Totally over Anders's head anyway.

"Legality?" He shifts his weight from one foot to the other, suddenly awkward. "Um. What kind of legality are we talking about here?"

"Eighteen means you can legally smoke, gamble on reservations, look at pornography...." Rory said, ticking them off on her fingers. "Oh, and it's the age of consent."

She blushed dark red. "Which means eighteen is when you can legally have sex, and it become illegal to do it with a minor."

This takes a few seconds for Anders to process. Predictably, it's a bit mangled by the end of the process.

"So like . . . when me and Cally -- you know -- right now, we're breaking the law? And after her birthday next year we're gonna have to wait until my eighteenth birthday?"

There's some unmistakable hyperventilation here.

Rory frowned. "Well, only if you get caught," she said, her mind way too deep in Yay Logic Mode to swift gears to OMG Cally and Anders Do That Mode.

"I don't wanna get caught," says Anders in an increasingly high-pitched tone, thinking of surveillance cameras and freaky school administrators who somehow know everything he's up to. "I don't wanna get caught and I don't wanna have to wait four months and why is that against the law anyway?"

"Um, to keep like, gross people in check," Rory replied. "She's not eighteen yet, so you don't have to worry."

"But I'll have to worry next year," replies Anders, completely taking it for granted that he and Cally will still be together at this point next year. "I don't like this idea."

That slightly whining tone of voice? Rory wouldn't be imagining it.

"But plenty of people circumvent the rule," Rory said, shaking her head. "I mean, look at Angel and Cal. I don't know if she's eighteen, but he's like, two hundred. And no one cares about them."

"He's . . ." Anders blinks. "So did not know that. Okay, whoa. Right. Not gonna worry about it. Yet."

"Just do some research, if you're that worried," Rory suggested. "I'm sure it'd be easy enough to look up Virginia laws on this. You might ask Professor Lyman."

She glanced back over at Cally. "I'd better let you get back to the birthday girl ~~because omgtired~~. Have fun, and tell her that there will, eventually, be cake when she's up for it. Provided it's in the next like, two days."

"I bet I could ask Grissom. Or get Cally to do it, since she's his TA." Anders nods and gives Rory one last hug. "Will do. And thanks again, 'kay?"

"You are very welcome," Rory grinned, returning the hug before wandering off.
