4th Floor Common Room: 3/11 - Evening - Nadia's Birthday Party

Somebody has decorated the common room to the hilt for Nadia's birthday.

There are party hats and party favors enough for everybody. And a picata spread from Cafe Fina.

"Were you?"

Bel sighed. "Look, I'll be honest. Originally I was, but I didn't know anything about the poisoning. Darla was just going to give him a happy moment."

Veronica was surprised that Bel admitted his involvement. "I take it Logan knows that then," she said, starting to understand why he would have threatened Bel. "So now that Angel is going to be okay, do you really think he would try to do something that would keep you and Phoebe apart?"

"I don't know," Bel said. "He hates me, every time he sees me it comes down to threats or fights. If he had had his way, I wouldn't have been able to see Angel at all in the clinic.

"Look, he can threaten me all he wants. But the minute he drags Phoebe into it, all bets are off."

"And how would you act around someone that tried to kill Phoebe?"

"If someone tried to kill Phoebe, they die," Bel said grimly.

The corners of her mouth twitched up very slightly.

"So, do you blame Logan for acting the way he does toward you?"

"Huh. Didn't think of it that way," Bel said. "But I was a different person then. And Logan's all lovey-dovey with Angel now, despite what Angelus did."

"Logan and Angel are friends now, but it took a long time. You can't expect people to automatically forgive you for the things you did just because you say you're sorry."

A flicker of undefinable emotion flashed on her face for a brief moment.

"Words can't make memories go away," she finished in a softer voice.

"What can?" he asked.

"Nothing," she replied honestly. "But actions speak louder than words and if you honestly want to be good and you can show people that..."

She let her words trail off as she considered something.

"Do you know why I was able to trust Angel?" she asked.

"Because he saved your life?" Bel said.

She nodded.

"But it wasn't just that. It was also the way he acted after that. He didn't expect me to trust him, even though he had saved my life. He didn't even expect me to talk to him."

"Got it," Bel said. "That's no problem. Not like anybody talked to me before hand. I'm only here for Phoebe now anyway. I don't need to talk to anyone else."

Veronica rolled her eyes. "And you were doing so well," she said with a sigh.

"You still don't get it. That attitude is why people don't talk to you. Do you even know what the words humble and contrite mean? Or the concept of doing something nice for someone without expecting anything in return?"

"Don't talk to me like I'm stupid," Bel snapped.

"I'm trying to help you, dammit. And, considering what you've done to me, I think I'm being pretty damn generous. I still don't know if I believe that you want to be good, but I know that Angel believes you and I trust him. I also know that Phoebe loves you and she's a dear friend."

Veronica's phone started ringing at that moment, but she ignored it.

"I know you're not stupid," she continued. "But you admitted yourself that you don't know how to be good. And you won't learn if you get snappy every time someone tries to explain something to you."

"So being good means I should listen when people are condescending towards me?" Bel said. "Got it. Your phone is ringing."

"Thanks for letting me know, I can let the voicemail get it," she said.

"Being good means you should listen to what people say. Period. And actually listen, not just hear. It also means that you shouldn't be too proud to admit when you're wrong or need help."

"I do listen," Bel said. "I have been. But when Angel talks to me, he doesn't try to make me feel like I'm stupid."

"Well, I'm sorry," she said sincerely. "I didn't intend to imply you were stupid."

"Okay," Bel said grudgingly.

The voicemail indicator on her phone beeped.

"I'm going to go and check this," she said, picking up her purse. "I guess I'll see you around."

"Yeah," he said. "Thanks for, uh, talking to me."

She gave him a surprised smile. "You're welcome," she said, standing up and walking out of the room so she could hear her message.
