Logan was in the kitchen. Cooking. Because when you were in a kitchen, working with a blender, you could call it cooking. Even if the result was more beverage-y than food-y. It was practically summer, anyway. Perfect time for a cold iced drink. With tequila.

The television was playing "Annie".

"I get that," Jack said. "So you and your parents would put up with a couple mutants and snow monsters so you can go to Princeton?"

"Harvard," Rory corrected. "And yeah. Plus...I don't know, I've kind of gotten fond of the place."

"Haaaarvard," Jack drawled. "My mistake."

"So what's good about this place? Other than the gym and the theater that shows painfully bad movies."

"The company in the common rooms," Rory deadpanned. She cracked a grin after a second. "I like the library, for one thing. And I don't know, some of the weird stuff is kind of nice. Not many girls who get a vampire puppy for their seventeenth birthday."

"You guys have a good library?" Jack asked, rubbing his chin. "What kind of stuff is in there?"

"And I'm guessing the puppy doesn't try to drain your blood while you sleep."

"Yeah, I work there," Rory replied. "We have everything, really, though all the dangerous materials are in Special Collections."

She gave a soft laugh. "And no, Vladdie doesn't do that. He was vamped at such a young age that he's pretty much exclusively bottle-fed on cow's blood."

"Huh," Jack said. "What about chemistry texts? How's your selection on that?"

He chickled a little, imagining a bottle-fed vampire puppy. "What type of dog is he?

"Chemistry? Pretty extensive," Rory said thoughtfully. "I've never had a reason to look at them. I'm a book and languages girl more than science whiz."

"Vladdie's a Papillon - very small, very fluffy, very active. And should be waking up," she checked her watch, "in the next few hours or so." She paused. "Wait. Speaking of pets - are you the Tyler who's watching Angela's cat?"

"I'm not so much a science whiz," Jack said. "My interest is more applied chemstiry. Making soap and stuff."

"Angela's the chick with the dyed hair, right? Yeah, she talked me into it. Said not many people liked her cat, or she didn't have any friends, or some sob story. You know her?"

"Why would you make soap when you can just buy it and it already smells nice and everythng?" Rory wondered.

She slanted a look at him. "That would be my best friend, yes. She said Min just seemed to like you, or something."

"It's a way to make money," Jack explained, with some patience. "It's because it smells nice and people like you buy it that I make it. I use Ivory, myself."

"If she said that, I guess it's true. No offense meant to your friend."

"That makes sense, I guess," Rory said thoughtfully. "Much more productive hobby than most. I didn't even know soap was so much a chemical thing - just that it's a fairly strong base. Huh."

"And yeah, none taken on her behalf. She's probably in the air by now, anyway."

"Soap is all about chemistry," Tyler said. "You need lye, fat, and a couple other things."

He paused. "Mess up, and it explodes."

Rory raised a brow. "Sounds kind of delicate. But you're like, an expert, right? We could probably use a few choice explosions around here."

"i have a lot of experience," Jack said. "And I'm careful. I've never had anything explode unless I wanted it to. But in theory ..." He shrugged. "There are all kinds of interesting experiments you can do."

"Yeah, makes sense," Rory said thoughtfully. "Considering what happens around here, though, having a good explosives expert around is something we can always use." She blushed. "Being able to converse in Latin isn't all that useful for most stuff."

"It is if you end up in ancient Rome," Jack said. "Otherwise, not so much." He let her think of him as an explosives expert. No point in bringing up the bombs that didn't work.

"So are you from Fandom, or did you just move here for school?"

"I'm originally from Stars Hollow, Connecticut," she supplied. "Which is right near Hartford, where I used to go to school. What about you?"

"Also on the east coast -- Wilmington, Delaware," Jack said. "I lived there all my life until now."
