Puffin Campfire, Monday Evening

Edward sat himself down at the edge of the fire ring, eyeing the fire as he cautiously set a few books down. Hunting around for a little bit dug up a proper stick for marshmallow roasting, and opening a bag of large poofy marshmallows, Edward set some marshmallows to roasting.

"Hm?" Alphonse hadn't quite caught what he said, but by the tone of it, it didn't sound good. Immidiately he wanted to hit himself silly for that-- obviously, it wasn't the right thing to say. "Ed?" the tone of his voice became more worried than curious.

"It's nothing, Al," Edward forced himself to look up and offer Al a small smile. "Don't worry about it."

He didn't press the issue any further, if only because the day had been going so smoothly. Now wasn't exactly the time to find out about some other horrible event that had happened in the past. "Okay," Alphonse assured him, turning back to the book he had in his hands. "But, um-- yeah, some of this looks like it could work..."

Edward nodded absently, having sort of lost his taste for the book at the moment. "Yeah, it could." He closed the book and then looked over at Alphonse. There really wasn't any other way... he would have had to.

Suddenly, he didn't feel much like thinking about alchemy at all.

Alphonse continued staring at the pages, but wasn't actually reading the words by now. He didn't make any attempt to look over at Edward, either, because now he knew he screwed the evening for both of them. "Sorry," Alphonse said quietly, but wasn't sure if his brother could hear him or not.
