WELCOME TO CHEERLEADER TRYOUTS!

Bleachers have been pulled out for the audience to sit on, the judges are in place (at least some of them are there at all times), there's a CD player there for your music, but no food or drinks, so bring your own or be entrepreneuring.

Marie gives her a sympathetic smile.

"Do you get stage fright?" she asks gently. "If you want to try, I could cheer next to you so you didn't feel all alone."

Aeryn stares at her.

"I do not want to try out for cheerleading. I have spent the last... frell knows how long trying to tell people that they would first have to kill me and use little ropes from the ceiling maybe to get me to cheer, and that is the only way I would ever do it. And I don't have stage fright. I don't need stage fright because I have no reason to go out there."

"Do you know anyone on the basketball team?" Marie asks, still completely unaware that she might be bugging the wrong person.

Aeryn sighs. "My boyfriend's on it," she says, and looks like she got used to using the word again pretty quick. "I didn't pay attention to who else."

"Who's your boyfriend?" Marie asks. "And don't you want to support him?"

"John Crichton," she says. "And I don't need to yell loudly to support him."

"Oh! I met him! He looks like Cameron," Marie grins. "How do you tell them apart? Cam says John is pudgy, but I didn't notice a difference."

"He's not pudgy," Aeryn says, and she's going to hit Cameron. She shrugs. "As long as they're not dressed exactly alike, I've never had a problem. They're just... different."

"I guess I just haven't talked to John enough to figure out all the differences," Marie says. "But Cameron taught me how to fly yesterday."

Aeryn frowns a little. "How?"

"In the flight simulator," Marie explains with a grin. "He couldn't believe I'd never flown before."

"I hope you're talking about flying as a passenger, because otherwise I'll have to roll my eyes at him for assuming everyone flies where they come from."

Marie nods. "I've never been on a plane or anything at all," she says. "Well, planes are all I could have been on, but apparently there are people here who have flown spaceships and stuff."

Aeryn nods. "I'm one of them," she says. And wonders how they're actually having a normal conversation that sprung from cheerleading.

"So are you from the future or from another planet or something?" Marie asks, somewhat reduntantly since the answer is obviously yes, but she is still fascinated by all these different people.

"Not exactly another planet," she says. "Command carrier. It's a ship."

"You grew up on a spaceship?" Marie says. "What was that like?"

Aeryn shrugs, considering it. She doesn't actually know how to describe it. "It was... It was like living in the dorms all the time. There were rules to follow, and people all around... It was nice."

"So how did you end up here?" Marie asks. Then she shakes her head. "I'm sorry. I ask a lot of questions sometimes. You don't have to tell me."

"It's all right," Aeryn tells her. Again, how did this conversation happen? "My species is predominantly military. I was stationed here and... stayed."

"You're in the military at your age? That seems weird," Marie says. "By the way, what's your name?"

"Aeryn," she says, not realizing she hadn't said it. "I was born into service. But I'm out of it now. Long story."

Marie nods, then recognizes the name. "Oh! You're the girl who did the radio," she says. "I was glad to hear someone normal doing it since the first broadcast I heard was one of John's. Xander assured me that all the broadcasters weren't crazy though." She may have forgotten the part about John being Aeryn's boyfriend.

"No, some of them are normal," she agrees. Notice how she doesn't discount the John-is-crazy insinuation.
