5th floor common room - Tuesday morning

River hadn't slept that well. Not bad dreams this time, just her mind being at full speed and refusing to turn itself off for sleep mode. Hence she was tired in the morning with a mind still racing.

Someone had left a pot of blue paint in one of the common room cupboards. Perhaps it was the blue colour, or perhaps it was just sleep deprivation, but River felt suddenly inspired. She chose a wall and proceeded to pain a huge blue octopus on it, with some of the longer arms continuing on to the floor and ceiling.

Tyler looked confused. "Is there usually a goose on your head, or is that some south american proverb?"

"No, and no. My friend Pip has randomly turned into a goose and he kept hopping up on my head when I was trying to look after him, yesterday."

"Pip is a goose and Bridge is a ferret," Tyler said cautiously. "Well, I guess if you were a goose, hair'd make a pretty good nest."

He paused. "Why do people keep turning into animals around here?"

"No idea. But one of the seniors last year turned into a bunny twice. And John Crichton has been nearly every animal known to man, but that's because he kept annoying the journalism teacher."

Tyler shrugged, deciding he just had to go with it. "So if I avoid the journalism teacher, I'll be fine?"

He remembered something. "Wait, isn't that blonde girl teaching journalism? Chloe something?"

"No, I think her name was Rita. But she was blonde."

So that theory was blown. "So maybe the lesson is, beware of blondes." Tyler glanced across the room. "Except maybe Buffy."

Nadia followed his gaze. "I don't know, isn't it always the ones who seem the most harmless that can really kick your ass?"

"Usually," Tyler agreed. "But c'mon. She's a cheerleader."

"So? Cheerleaders are really athletic."

Tyler shrugged. "Point," he allowed.

He looked at Nadia skeptically. "So are you cheering?"

"Didn't make the team. But Buffy still gave me something to do."

"You sound excited," Tyler deadpanned.

Nadia sighed. "I'm the mascot."

Wasn't like people wouldn't find out eventually, anyway.

Tyler tried to keep himself from chuckling. Wouldn't be nice.

"Huh. Do you get to wear a fuzzy costume?"

"Do you know what our school mascot is?" Nadia raised an eyebrow. "A gremlin."

"I had an idea," Tyler admitted, smirking.

"You'll make a very cute gremlin."

Nadia was not entirely certain that was a compliment, but decided to take it as one. "Thanks."

"Welcome," Tyler smirked.

"So what's the costume like? We aren't really doing uniforms for the basketball team, just colored t-shirts."

"It's kind of just a big mask and some gloves," Nadia said modding the costume ruthlessly. "And I guess something blue and gold with that."

"You could borrow a basketball t-shirt," Tyler suggested. "Or wear a dress, 'cause maskets who wear dresses are hilarious."

"Why would that be funny? I'm a girl."

Tyler shook his head impatiently.

"You're not getting it. The funny part isn't girl wearing a dress, because you're right, that's normal. It's mascot -- specifcally, gremlin, with fuzzy gremlin head (whatever they look like) and big furry gloves -- in a dress."

Nadia thought about this. "Yeah, okay, but it'd be even funnier if it was a boy mascot in a dress."

"You're not wrong," Tyler said.

"Anyhow. Buffy and I decided the game will be a week from Saturday, so you have some time."
