Third Floor Common Room, Lunchtime

After a handwavey walk into town for supplies, Dawn set out a bunch of sandwich fixings, pretzels, chips of various descriptions, cookies, fruit, lemonade, iced tea, and soda.

A small handwritten sign told people to help themselves, so she didn't have to keep repeating herself.

As for Dawn, she sat down with a book to enjoy her hummus with cheese, sprouts, carrots and sweet pickles. Occasionally she sipped from her lemonade.

"Oh, man...that stinks."

"No, what stinks was that Alfred wouldn't let me go get more supplies," Walter said, frowning. "I had to clean the kitchen with a toothbrush, and his standards are exacting. Never worry about the cleanliness of Cafe Fina's kitchen, I assure you."

"Okay, I won't. But a toothbrush? Yikes on this Alfred guy."

"I know. But to be fair, he can be very generous as well," Walter added grudgingly. "I never thought I'd like him, but he's always good to my friends, and to me when I need it."

"That's good," Dawn nodded and took a bite of sandwich. "So what do you do at Cafe Fina? Are you the chef, or the waiter, or the maitre'd, or what?"

With his own sandwich constructed, Walter found a place to sit. "Waiter. Alfred is my tutor in the art of butlering; service is a large component, so working as a waiter is part of the training."

"What made you decide to become a butler?" Dawn asked, trying to figure out what Walter had put into his sandwich. It looked really interesting, from what she could tell.

A better question might be what hadn't Walter put in his sandwich. The answer to that appeared to be tomatoes.

"I sort of fell into it. The other work I do doesn't keep me busy all the time, my employer really needs someone keeping him out of trouble, most people can't tolerate his other servant, and there you have it - the perfect niche."

"Geez, you have other work, too?" Dawn blinked at Walter. "Do you have more hours in the day than everybody else? And do you like it?"

Walter grinned and shook his head. "My other work is at home in London, I have the same number of hours in the day as everyone else, and yes, I like it."

"London? Isn't that a really long commute?"

"Quite. Especially since I haven't actually been home since January. Even though I went to London over spring break. It wasn't my London."

She rolled her eyes. "Know how that goes. I know people here from different universes, all over the timeline. Do you miss it?"

Walter considered that for a moment before nodding. At least he missed something back home. "Most everyone does, I suppose. When you say you know people here from 'different universes, all over the timeline,' does that mean that you know people from your home? Or just the huge number of people here who are from different universes and different times? Like Gwynn, who's from the 12th century?"

"Well, I know them, too," she shrugged, "but I have people who I know, that don't know me, because I haven't met them yet where they're from. It's a little frustrating."

"I understand. I found out not that long ago that there are people here whom I will know, probably, about fifty years in my future. It's all very confusing."

"It makes my head hurt," Dawn said, wondering if there was ibuprofen in the common room. "How're you dealing?"

"Largely by not thinking too much about it. How do you tell someone, 'oh, I know you in the future, when I may or may not be a complete arse, but let's be friends now?'"

"I'd probably leave out the complete arse part from the middle," she admitted.

"They met him. The complete arse, I mean." Walter shrugged uncomfortably. "It's complicated."

"Ah," she said, sympathetically.

"Better topics, shall we? As we're new, I believe I'm allowed to ask the standard 'what brings you to Fandom?' question."

She grinned. "My sister sent me here while she takes care of some stuff at home. You?"

"I'm just one of many people here who heard the words 'well' and 'rounded' before they were given their travel information to come here," Walter said with a wry smile.

She started giggling. "There so needs to be a revision of that brochure."
