Peter had his St. George's cross flag close by as he waited impatiently for the match to begin.  England vs. Ecuador with continued participation in the World Cup at stake.

He had run down to J, GOB ostensibly to get some pastries to share for breakfast but really because he couldn't sit still any longer so there was a selection of muffins and doughnuts on one of the tables.

Now for the football to start...

Peter laughed. "Catch that ball!" he added as a shot went towards Robinson.

Willow went to sit beside him on the couch. She helped herself to a doughnut. "So I have a footie question."

Peter sat beside her bouncing jumping with nerves. "What's that then?"

"Why do we say 'up England'?" she asked. "Because as I watch the game the ball mostly goes sideways, so it seems to me we're encouraging them to kick it in entirely the wrong direction."

Peter considered. "I don't really know? That's what my Dad always said. I don't think it's meant to be taken literally?"

"Okay," Willow said, willing to accept that. She thought about it. "The ball's kind of bouncy. Maybe we're rooting for them not to get one that's flat and just lies there?"

"Perhaps?" Peter replied. "Though I'd hope if the ball were defective, the ref would take it off the field. I think it's like 'rule britannia!' 'Rise up England' or something. And then the first part fell off because that's too long for a cheer?"

"That does make sense," Willow said. "Plus 'Down England!' sounds like we're shooing a puppy away from the coffee table."

"Well, that and we don't really want to encourage them to lose," Peter said. "All the way to July 9th!"

"WOOOO! JULY NINTH!!!" Willow said. She turned to Peter. "What's that?"

Peter really had no tact just now as he almost fell over laughing. "Championship game of the World Cup. If we win today, we play next Saturday, then semifinals the next week, and the final on the 9th."

"Oh," Willow said, mostly thinking the laughing was cute. "Well that does sound good then. Up England!"

Peter leaned over to kiss Willow's cheek. "That's what I'm saying." He grinned. "How are you today since I've not asked yet."

Willow smiled at the kiss. "Very well, thank you. My bed was quite snuggly this morning. If hunger hadn't motivated me I might've stayed there. Unfortunately pillows are not edible, in spite of what that joke says."

"There's a joke about eating pillows?" Peter asked. "Do I want to know?" He grinned. "But aren't you glad you got up now? Pastries, footie, and ginger beer are adequate temptations?"

"You know," Willow said. "The one about the guy who dreamt he was eating a marshmellow?" She grinned at him, snuggling close. "And yeah. Pastries, footie, and ginger beer are the only things in this room I'm interested in."

Peter grinning, putting an arm around her. "Well, you know, something had to convince you to stop sleeping. Plus, I've heard that Pippi's a nice girl."

Willow grinned back, snuggling closer now that his arm was around her. "Oh yes. It's redheaded solidarity, you know. We have to stick together."

"Now? I am very, very afraid," Peter said.

"It's okay," Willow said. She leaned in to whisper. "I heard one of them likes you."

"You don't say?" Peter said. "That startles me a bit, I think."

"How come?" Willow asked.

"You haven't heard that humbleness is an important part of being British?" Peter replied, starting to grin again.

Willow grinned back. "I thought it was a fondness for scones."

"And for tea, of course," Peter said. "And maybe a good measure of rain of rain and fog."
