Third Floor Common Room, Wednesday Evening

Dawn flipped through channels, and finally settled on a Very Special Episode of Spooky Things. Before she knew it, she was laughing at the absurdity of the plot and drooling over both brothers.

"But she didn't kill him," Callisto "Hades is, reputably at least, a fairer god than most, I doubt he's consider putting someone in jail when you deserved to be there, suitable grounds for letting your spirit out of Tartarus."

"Maybe Hades had nothing to do with this," Bel said. "Most people nowadays don't believe in your gods. They have different ideas of the afterlife. Demons go to the wastelands; I don't know what happens to human souls."

"Doesn't really matter if you believe in them or not, you don't have to believe in the rain to get soaked," Callisto shrugged. "Regardless of who exactly, if there is a god involved with this, frell, even if there isn't, there are still have rules the dead have to play by."

"I told you how to make me go away," Claire said. "You just have to remember."

Bel glared at the ghost. "I'm not going to do what she wants," he said firmly. "There's gotta be another way to get rid of her. I don't care about any rules."

"What does she want?" Callisto asked. "Because unless it's something which involves killing other people, since I'd have to hurt you if you tried that, that might just be the easiest way to get rid of her."

"All you have to do is remember," Claire said.

Bel shook his head. "She wants me to remember things that are better left in the past," he said.

"She want you to remember," Callisto repeated. "Bel, we're not what I'd call friends, but trust me when I say memories can't harm you. Sure, they can hurt more than anything in the world, but they can't harm you, not unless you let 'em."

"There are a lot of things I've done or have happened to me that I prefer not to think about," Bel said. "There's just no point, especially not to appease a stupid ghost."

"Bel," Callisto said. "I do know you have a brain, if only because of the sheer variety of desouling attempts you thought up, so indulge me a moment and use it. This ghost wants you to remember something, why do you think that is?"

"To punish me," Bel said hesitantly. "To make me feel the pain of what I did to her."

[ooc: have to crash -- catch you in the morning?]

"Okay, you're sounding far too much like Angel right now," Callisto rubbed her forehead. "I know you're trying out the whole do-gooder redemption gig, but do you think you deserve to be punished for it?"

"I'd prefer not to be," Bel said. "But redemption can really suck sometimes."

"It probably wouldn't count as redemption if it was easy," Callisto pointed out. "Look at it this way, you're going to have to deal with your past sooner or later, longer you wait..."

"She's right," Claire said. "I'm not going to go away until you remember me and what you did."

Bel glared at the ghost. "I can't change anything I did," he said. "So there's no point in dwelling on it."

"No, you can't," Callisto said bluntly. "But the longer it takes to reconcile who you were then with who you are now, the longer people like this ghost can use it as a weapon against you."

"How am I supposed to reconcile it?" Bel said. "You don't know the things I've done."

"No, I don't," Callisto replied. "But all things considered, I've probably seen worse. Maybe even done it too."

"I doubt you've done worse," Bel said. "But either way, how do you deal with it?"

"Truth to tell, I don't," Callisto shrugged. "I know that I'm going to Tartarus when I die and that there's nothing I can do about that. All I can do is try to ensure that I send the right people down there before me."

"So you don't believe in redemption?" Bel asked curiously. "What about Angel trying to find it?"

"It might be more accurate to say I don't believe in redemption for me," Callisto said. "As for Angel...he believes he can find it, and 'll save fighting against his stubborn streak for situations where it can do some good."

"Why don't you believe in redemption for you?" Bel went on. "Has what you done been so unforgivable?"

Callisto paused a long time before answering. "Yes."

Bel nodded in sympathy. "I know the feeling," he said. "It seems impossible to balance, doesn't it? And even doing good doesn't make the bad go away."

Callisto shrugged. "Some things you can't balance, can't make up for."
