The roof, Wednesday evening

Nadia lay on the edge of the roof on a towel with one of the books from the library open in front of her. She knew from her conversation with Alfred that she wasn't likely to find any details about Walter's mission itself in the books, but at least she could get an idea of the area he was getting into. And maybe a better idea of where he came from, in general.

The ideas she was getting weren't pretty. But then, she'd learned early on that a lot of things in life weren't.

Distractions would, of course, be entirely welcome.

Nadia borrowed a wrench and looked at the panel.

Normally she'd just force the thing open with a pry bar or something, but she got the feeling that was not quite what was warranted here. They wanted to be able to put it back on later, after all.

So instead she started fooling with one of the bolts, taking a minute or so to figure out how to adjust the wrench and which way to turn the bolt.

"How long have you been working on this thing?"

"Ummm... well, the problem arose that I didn't work on it for a couple months?" Cally said. "Before that, it was about a month putting it together. From all the proper parts, though. Not scratch built."

"That's still really neat, though. I could never do something like this. Did you put it together by yourself?" Nadia got the first bolt off, then moved on to another, this time able to work much faster since she kinda sorta had an idea of what she was doing.

Cally started helping Nadia with the bolts. "Bridge, Doctor Grissom, and Anders all helped at times," she said. "Mostly Bridge, though. He's the one who finally got it to seem to run. But then it sat all winter and... no juice."

"Ahhh. It probably works better if you get it running from time to time instead of sitting, huh."

"Especially with the whole snow and cold and thaw stuff," Cally said. "Thing might be rusted solid inside, for all I know." Cally took off the last bolt and grabbed the panel and gave it a tug. And it didn't budge. "Or the outside, for that matter."

Oooo, maybe they would get to pry it off. Nadia pulled out her leatherman and started working on of the smaller, less used blades under the panel.

She liked destruction. She was pretty good at it.

"Well, at least it keeps you busy, right?"

"Yeah, now, at least," Cally said. "Didn't even think about the frakking thing 'til... well, yeah..."

"Understood." Nadia didn't persue that subject any further. They might be two lonely-ish girls working on a viper, but that didn't mean they had to think about that. "So, did you sign up for workshops, yet?"

"A couple, yeah," Cally said. "Scoobying and Photography. I was kinda roped into the latter one."

"Oh, I took both of those this session. They're fun. Let me guess, Veronica guilted you into taking photography?"

"Not so much guilted, but yeah," Cally said. "Besides, can't hurt to have your roomie as a teacher. Erm, even if I should hopefully be moved, by then."

"Yeah, that's about what I figured when I signed up, only it was more along the lines of 'it can't hurt to have your big sister as a teacher'."

Cally smiled. "Big sister, huh? Didn't know you too were that close. Neat." She started pulling at the panel and it finally shifted and popped it's relase. "There we go."

"Yeah, she and Marty kind of adopted me. Which is weird, but sweet." Nadia peered into the space where the panel had been. "So, what are we looking at?"

"The major fuel line couplings are in the way of where the engines are attached, so all we have to do is..." Cally reached in to unhook a fuel line, fogetting this would send waste oil and fuel accelerant splattering down onto her face.

"Get really disgusting," she ginished, wiping the muck off her face.

"Wow. When you said parts of the job were dirty, I didn't realize they were that dirty." Nadia grabbed some tissues from her pocket and offered them to her. "That stuff isn't dangerous, right? Just icky?"

"Just icky," Cally said. "But still kinda dangerous if I swallow any, which I thankfully didn't." Cally wiped her face with the tissued and sighed. "Okay, but that's exposed the engine latchings, so I can see if there's... nope. Nothing wrong in there."

"Right." Nadia blinked into the mass of machinery. "Nothing wrong."

It was apparently supposed to look like that. Mental note. "What next?"

"We hope that the panel will go back in place, after I get the fuel line back hooked..."

More goo splattered down on Cally.

"Up."

"It's just going to keep doing that, huh." Nadia would offer to help, but had no idea what to do. "Maybe we should have a bucket or something under here?"

Cally pointed at a nozzle switch next to the fuel lines.

"See that? That makes sure to shut down the flow. If you remember to switch that? It doesn't goo you."

"So . . . should I switch it? Or are you enjoying the goo?"

Cally finished rehooking the fuel line. "No point, now." Cally said. "And no, I'm not enjoying the goo. There is a time and place for dirty stickiness, and this is not one of them."

"Point taken." Nadia held up the panel. "So now we put this thing back on?"
