Second Floor Common Room [Thursday Morning]

Bridge was bored. So he'd dragged the telekinesis ball out of his room, since he hadn't practiced in a while, and sat down crosslegged on a couch in the common room to do so.

After a few minutes, he had the ball floating in a lazy circuit around the room.

"Be right back, then," Anakin said with a small smile, heading for the door.

A few minutes later he was back with small jar of gold glitter in his hand.

He sat down next to Nadia and poured most of the contents out into his hand. "What do you want to see?" he asked. "I can do stars and planets--I use this mostly to work on the homework I get from home--but I can also do faces and stuff."

"Wow. Um, anything you want, really. Can you show me where you're from?"

"Sure," Anakin said, concentrating.

The glitter lifted out of his hand and spiralled out into a shiny, golden galaxy. "This is the entire thing," he said. "Well, much smaller."

He moved his hand again and the glitter revolved into a sparkling ball. "And this is Coruscant," he said. "Where the Jedi Temple is."

Nadia watched the display in awe. "That's where you took your flight and flying students, right? How do you do that?"

"A lot of practice," Anakin replied with a smile. "I've been working on controlling things through the Force since I was nine years old." He waved his hand and the glitter spun again, turning into a representation of Earth. "Something more familiar, maybe?"

Nadia was tempted to reach out and touch the ball, but pulled her hand back at the last moment. "That's amazing."

"You can touch it," Anakin said, "it's just glitter, but I won't let it drop or anything."

His cheeks went a little pink. "It's not that big a deal. It's not like I can use glitter to confound my enemies or something--it's just a training tool."

"You could hurl it into their eyes, or distract them with its boykissy powers." Nadia reached out again, gently touching the hovering ball of glitter. "Wow. I was afraid I'd break it or something."

"I'm not sure I'd be able to convince my old teacher to distract anyone with the power of boykissing." Anakin snickered. "The look on his face might make it worth trying, though."

He smiled. "And as long as I'm not really, really distracted, I've got this under control."

"What does it take to get you that distracted?"

Anakin thought about it. "Lots of shooting," he said finally. "I tend to get less focused then." He smiled. "But then I'm not normally trying to keep track of thousands of little tiny things--I'm just paying attention to the blaster bolts and making sure they don't hit me."

"Okay, that's definitely something I wish I could do."

Anakin smiled. "It is pretty handy," he admitted. "There's never a problem scratching that spot on your back you can't reach, for instance."

"Plus, you could always make sure that your hair is in place."

"Always a top concern," Anakin said, laughing and yanking at his braid.

"What's with the braid thing, anyway?"

"Symbol of my apprenticeship," Anakin explained. "I can't cut it off until the Council decides I'm fully trained." He rolled his eyes. "So I have another decade to look forward to of this particular haircut."

"That's . . . a really long time. They get to tell you what haircut you can have? That kind of sucks."

"I think it's supposed to teach us humility, personally," Anakin said. "I mean, why do I need a braid and a ponytail? It looks completely stupid." He smiled. "At least at home I'm not the only one who looks like this--all of the apprentices who can grow hair have this same haircut."

"It does look kind of silly. But you carry it off, well. Some of the others can't grow hair?"

"Becoming a Jedi isn't limited to humans," Anakin explained. "There are dozens of different species in the Temple, all studying to do the same thing."

"So anyone can use the force and get trained?"

Anakin shook his head. "Not exactly. Force-sensitivity is something you're born with, like the color of your eyes, or the ability to dance or whatever. If you live in my galaxy and are born Force-sensitive, you're sent to the Jedi Temple shortly after you're born and grow up there. You can be Force-sensitive all your life, but without training you wouldn't be able to control and manipulate the universe around you." He shrugged. "You wouldn't be Jedi."

"But how can they tell when someone is?"

"They have a different presence in the Force," Anakin explained. "They're pretty easy to pick out once you know what you're looking for." He yanked at his braid again. "I mean, they have instruments to double check, too, confirm the gut reaction with their midichlorian count, but Jedi are big on going with their feelings."
