The roof, Monday evening

After spending some mostly handwaved, thanks to the work schedule time in town that afternoon and visiting Jamie, Nadia decided that the easiest way to figure out what she should do about what was happening to her friends in Argentina was to contact the only person she knew who might be able to have an opinion on it, Sophia.

An hour and a long distance phone call later, and Nadia was officially enrolled in Senor Fox's training program and had a plane ticket to leave from Dulles Wednesday night.

It was all rather more sudden than she'd expected, and her mind was whirling. She hadn't even decided that she was going home, but Sophia seemed to have decided for her.

She had no idea what to tell Walter, let alone anyone else.

So she sat on the edge of the roof and watched the sun set, trying to work everything out in her mind.

Nadia blinked. "Cally, of course I'll write. I'm not just going to forget about everyone here."

She'd learned that lesson already.

Cally gave Nadia a look. "You better not. Cause I've had enough people leave and never say anything ever again."

She was trying not to cry.

Nadia looked away. "So have I. I won't do that."

Cally nodded. "When do you leave?"

"Wednesday night."

Cally choked. "So soon?"

"The course starts Monday. They wanted me to get there early, so I could get a place and get settled in. . . ."

Cally was sticking with being upset. It was better than bawling.

"Well, I'm sure you'll do great, and you won't even have a chance to even miss us." She stood up and harrumphed.

Nadia looked like she might burst into tears. "I--Cally, no! I don't want to go, I have to!"

Cally gave Nadia a look. "Why are you going if you don't want to? Is someone going to die if you don't?"

Nadia looked down. "People already have," she said quietly. "I called my old guardian to ask advice, and she signed me up. If I don't go, I'll be a fugitive."

Cally blinked. "Holy frak," she said. "I... oh, Lords, why didn't you say so in the first place?" She sat back down and tried to hug Nadia as tightly as possible.

Nadia hugged back, tightly. "That email I got. Back in Buenos Aires, I was one of the oldest of a group of street kids. The older kids looked after the younger kids, and after I came here, they didn't have anyone any more."

Cally sniffled a bit, but just clung to Nadia for a bit.

"And you're going back to protect them?"

"I'm going to try."

Cally nodded and pulled back from Nadia. "Okay. But you still better frakking write."

Nadia smiled a little. "I will. I promise."

"You want me to hang around? Only I should probably head down to my cabin soon. But if you need me here, I can stay."

"No, it's okay. You've got stuff to do. I should move down or something, too."

For all of two nights. Great.

Cally leaned in to give Nadia another hug. "Just don't take off without saying goodbye, either."

Nadia shook her head. "I won't."

"Good," Cally said, and with a little wave, she disappeared back down into the building.
