Willow made herself comfortable on the couch as she set about doing her reading.

She had books on beavers and was prepared to shake them down for as much information as was possible.

Yes, she was taking notes.

Yes, she had the highlighters handy.

She was still interruptable, however.

"That just means the odds of it happening are getting better all the time," Willow said.

"Do you...speak Beaver?" Bel said, still doing his best not to snicker.

Now Willow looked worried. "They have their own language??"

Bel shrugged. "I don't know," he said. "I've never had one talk back if I've ever, uh, spoken to one before."

"This is a way more complicated issue than people give it credit for," Willow said.

"I suspect you need a very good tongue if you want to speak to beavers accurately," Bel said innocently.

"I'm not so bad with the languages needed for spells," Willow said. "Think that makes me enough of a linguist?"

Bel nodded gravely. "Sounds like you have a talented enough tongue to get the job done," he said.

"I'm just hoping I can make them happy," Willow said. "Or at least not reject me."

"I'm sure they'll be happy to, uh, listen to you," Bel said. Keeping a straight face was getting harder and harder.

"But will they like me?" Willow asked, looking worried.

"Hard to say," Bel said. "If it's your first time, it may not go well, but if you show that you're sincere in your efforts, I'm sure that will help matters."

"Very sincere!" Willow said. "As sincere and dedicated as I can possibly be!"

"Then I'm sure they'll find you pleasing," Bel said.

"Do you think they'd like a handshake?" Willow asked.

Bel had to look away a moment to stop himself from bursting out laughing. "Maybe," he said when he composed himself. "Touch is very important in communication."

"But they don't have, you know, hands," Willow said. "I mean sure they get by but what if I make a mistake and grab fur by accident?"

"Just take your time and be gentle," Bel advised. "Try just offering a finger."

"You think that'd be a more welcoming method?" Willow asked. "Not open to misinterpretation?"

"If you move carefully and slowly it should be okay," Bel said, grinning. "Just kinda ease into it. You can always offer another finger if the beaver seems to welcome it."

"Hold on," Willow said, picking up her notebook. "I should write this down so I don't forget."

"You'll have to let me know how it goes when you meet your first beaver," Bel said.

"If I ever do," Willow said. "Right now this is all in theory. I almost wish I had some kind of spell to see if beavers are in my future."

"That would certainly be an interesting spell," Bel chuckled. "You never know around this place. You could be surrounded by beavers someday."

"Which is why I'm preparing," Willow said, holding up one of her books. "It can't hurt to be on the safe side. Unless the safe side is made of uncovered knives. In which case it'd be very painful, as well as poorly named."
