The roof, Friday evening

Nadia had had about enough of the snow and was hanging out on the roof instead wearing a cotton poncho from home.

She continued to pluck the rhythm of the song on the guitar as she stared out over the town.

Silly to think there wouldn't be anybody there.

"Hey. I got Pip's email,"

"Yeah. Me too... He showed it to me."

"How are you doing?"

"Contemplating the ethics of using my crystal ball for personal gain." she said sitting down next to her friend.

"He'll be fine. If any of us going home to do something dumb will be, it's Pip. Even if the timing of him leaving sucks."

"Boy howdy. I asked him out, he showed me the email, then he kissed me." she said. "He's a rat."

"He kissed you, huh? Well that's good at least, right?"

"I'd say it was pretty good ya." she said nodding.

Walter came up the roof because he expected to find Nadia there and he wasn't disappointed. As was often the case, her musical choice left him wondering if it was an insight into her personal feelings, or just something that had struck her fancy.

"Hey."

"Hey. Did you get Pip's email?"

"No. I haven't opened my computer today. I've been reading about guns. Is something happening?"

"He's going home for a mission."

There's a lot of that going around.

He opted not to say that and asked the next salient question, "He'll be coming back?"

Preferably in less than a year.

"He's not sure when, but yeah. I'm even pretty sure he was right when he said he would."

"He's good at what he does. We'll see him again soon." He pulled out one of his new off-planet cigarettes and lit it. "Does Pippi know?"

"He sent her the email, too. She was going to ask him out, today."

"I am completely and utterly surprised to find you here," Cally said. She was in the orange jumpsuit and had her toolbelt.

"I'm a surprising girl."

"How was shopping?" Cally asked, double checking her hair was tied back properly.

Nadia shrugged. "You going to work on the viper, huh?"

"That was the plan," Cally said. "Unless you got a better offer for me."

"All I've got is sitting around and talking."

Cally sat down next to Nadia and smiled. "Which is actually more interesting than trying to jury rig a control database to actually send signals properly."

"I don't know what that means, but I agree."
