Dawn was stretched out on one of the couches and flipping through channels.

"Oooh, sharks."

After a few minutes, she was feeling a bit hungry, so she got up to make herself a sandwich. Any resemblance between the song she was humming and the Teeth theme song was purely coincidental.

"I understand. Wish there was something I could do to help with that."

"It's alright. I get more practice than you'd expect just going through my day. It's been a week since I got the lens for my off eye, and only three without practice."

"I'm glad to hear that."

"Do you want to do something? Fun, I mean? Where we smile and laugh and don't dwell on things for a while."

"Yes," said Nadia, with rather a lot of conviction. "Any ideas?"

"We were going to make a squirrel as a friend for Anna. From what I've seen of the weather, this Englishman is not going to go out during the day to do it."

"Honestly, the Argentine doesn't much want to go out during the day right now. I have tomorrow free, we could go look for stuff tonight?"

"I like the way you think," Walter said, refusing any tinge of sadness to that. "So tomorrow we try to hit each other and then build a squirrel together? Sometimes life borders on perfect."

He grinned over at her. "We just need to get some kissing and some handcuffs into the mix."

"That could be arranged. Um, not at the hotel, though. I think Mr. Kent is on to Elena and Mario."

"That's a pity, I like the rooms there and it's a bit hot for camping."

"Maybe we could sneak in while that other guy is running the front desk?"

"Did you learn anything good about disguise while you were away?" She'd always been fond of trying that.

"Wigs and glasses. And accents. Accents are very important."

"Then you could disguise yourself as someone they wouldn't harass checking in. Really, I don't know why they care anyway as long as we pay the room fee and don't make a mess."

"It might have something to do with the fact that we're teenagers?"

"So? I've been to war for my country. Can't I have a little privacy with my girlfriend without being harassed?"

"Am I?"

Then Walter realized what he'd said.

"Ah... I suppose that was presumptuous of me."

Nadia's expression closed down. "So I'm not?"

She had no idea what to think about that.

"I thought you wanted 'friends with benefits.'" He wasn't sure what to think either.

Well, maybe he wasn't quite that unsure.

"I don't think I'm very good at thinking of it that way."

She'd said that because it had seemed to be what he wanted. . . .

"Do you want to try it again? Having a relationship?"

How did they know one or the other of them wouldn't just go away again?

"I've been thinking about it, and how I feel about you hasn't changed, except that I feel like I shouldn't be feeling it because you aren't my girlfriend."

He rolled his eyes at himself. "And we already have a relationship. I care what happens to you, I think you care what happens to me. It's just the rules of what we tolerate that are fuzzy right now."

"Of course I care about what happens to you. That hasn't changed. Not since day one."

Nadia shook her head. "We're making this too complicated."

Walter snorted at her use of the C-word.

"We had a pretty simple agreement before. But it won't exactly work now."

Nadia nodded, though she didn't want to think about the other person Walter was hoping he'd get a chance to kiss. "We've already agreed on what I want, though. The honesty."
