Isabel sat on the counch watching March of the Penguins hoping a movie about Antartica would help her not think about how hot it was. It wasn't working.

"Real mature," Peter said, smiling. "And Antarctica is south, actually."

"I've been told that, yeah." Alanna grinned at Peter. "And I've never been that far south either. I don't think anyone has. The Copper Islands is the most southern point I can name. Roof of the World is the most northern." She paused. "I'd like to visit there some day."

"I'd think 'Foundation of the World' would be the most southern point, contrast it with the Roof," Peter said, shrugging.

Alanna shrugged. "Like I said, never been there. I've never even been out of Tortall." She pouted. "That'll need to get fixed. Do people go to Antawhateveritwas often here?"

"Not really. It's too cold," Peter said. "It's usually just scientists studying the continent, or the local animals or something."

"So...freaky birds in tuxes and guys trying to understand them?"

"Pretty much, yeah," Peter said. "There are other animals, but that's the gist of it."

"Peope who want to study their entire lives are weird." Alanna decided using her twin as an example in her head.

"I'm thinking I might become a scientist," Peter said. "Which probably doesn't shoot down your argument."

"No, no it doesn't. But my other example was my twin, so you're in good company. Weird company, but good."

"You have a twin?" Peter asked. "I didn't know that. Just from what you've said so far, I imagine this sibling is a bit different from you."

"Yup. Thom. Bastard's over a foot taller than me." Alanna pouted. "Hates sports, hates being hit, hates hunting, hates horses, and loves magic. He lives for it. He's uh...well, I'm the nice twin but he's the smart one. And oh yeah. I recently found out that at 18 he's now very well on the path to becoming the youngest Master. Ever. ... Bastard."

"Wait. You're the nice one?" Peter asked skeptically.

Alanna snorted. "As hard as that is to believe, yeah. He has no friends. He doesn't trust anyone except me. He thinks everyone, myself excepted, is beneath him. He sees nothing wrong with using people." She sighed. "I care for my friends. He doesn't get that."

"Ah," Peter said. "Yeah, I've known a few people like that. That's why I appreciate people like you, as immature and prickly as you may be sometimes." A momentary frown turned into a smile as he returned to the light ribbing.

"Oh yes, grandpa. Because you're oh so mature and sweet." Alanna grinned at Peter.

"If you don't believe me, ask that nice girl, Charlene Kawalsky," Peter said. "I'm a saint."

Blink blink. "When did Charlie become a girl?"

"Other way around. Charlene became a boy three years ago," Peter explained.

See Alanna's mouth open and close a few dozen times. "You can do that?"

"There are surgeries that can adjust genders, yes," Peter said.

"Hunh. That's interesting."

"Surgical technology is amazing nowadays," Peter said. "Kind of weird as well, but amazing."
