Isabel sat on the counch watching March of the Penguins hoping a movie about Antartica would help her not think about how hot it was. It wasn't working.

"And cleaning up the mess afterward?" Conner nodded knowingly. "I still can't believe how many people around here totally get that. It's awesome."

Conner looked at her, curious. "Does that make you not look forward as much to going home for visits? Going back to that?"

"That's what everybody seems to think, yeah. I've only been here a couple of months myself but I'm starting to feel that way," Conner replied. He thought for a moment and smiled wistfully. "All my friends back in Reefside have gone off to do their own thing . . . Ethan's at tech school, Kira moved to New York, Trent's in art school, Eric's always on tour with his extreme sports group, and, well, Doctor O's here. So, pretty much everyone else I know who got the weirdness isn't there Makes me feel like an outsider right where I grew up."

"Yep," Conner said, an odd expression crossing his face for a second. "Things just change sometimes, I guess. Sometimes before you realize it. Like that song about the taxi and the parking lot."

"It's kind of an old song. How does it go? 'Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got 'till it's gone?'" Conner shoved his hands into his pockets and chuckled at a memory. "Trent used to try and get Kira to sing that every time she played a gig. She kept holding out and saying it wasn't really her style . . . but it actually suited her voice really well. She finally did give in and sing it at her last gig before going to New York, and our whole group split up. I miss those guys."

"It's from, like, the sixties or something. That's pretty old to me," Conner said. "And yeah. For all the new experiences, and everything, even with the downsides this place is definitely worth it."
