Gym, Tuesday morning

Cameron was working the bag a bit enthusiastically this morning. Chances were that he was trying not to think too much about the fact that it was the last time he was going to be training with someone. It wasn't working.

"Is that so?" she asked, crossing her arms over her chest.

Which really was a dumb thing to do. He planted his feet firmly on the ground and at the same time grabbed her arms. In one smooth movement - okay, maybe not that smooth but the result was there, - he rolled them around so he was on top now and kept her arms to the ground so she couldn't try to get the upper hand again.

"I think so," he finally countered.

Veronica looked up at him and considered her options. She shifted slightly and realized he didn't have her legs pinned too tight and, after a few moments of running scenarios in her mind, she finally pulled her right leg up quickly, slamming her knee into his stomach.

Cameron groaned and let go of her hands in favour of wrapping them around his stomach as he rolled to the side. "Dude," he complained, trying to catch his breath.

Veronica sat up and gave him a sweet smile. "You okay?"

Cameron didn't dignify that with a response as he slung an arm across his eyes. "Way to go out."

"Do you need an ice pack or something?" Veronica asked, starting to feel bad.

"Just gimme a minute," he waved at her.

"So whattya think, Teach? Did I learn good?" Veronica wanted to know.

"I knew I'd regret it," he grumbled.

Veronica stood up and offered him a hand.

He was half tempted to try pulling her back down, but he didn't feel like having her knee anywhere else so he played nice and let her help him up. "You're doing great. You just got to make sure you keep up with it."

"I'll do my best to find some poor, unsuspecting soul to practice with," she promised.

"I'm sure you'll find someone in no time," he sounded wistful.

"It won't be the same," Veronica said.

"No," he agreed softly, finally looking down and squeezing her hand.

Veronica squeezed back and then hugged him. "Thank you."

He wrapped his arms around her, taking in a deep breath and telling himself that he wasn't going to spend the rest of the week saying goodbye to her. That could wait.

"You can sing me a happy birthday song Thursday," he decided, trying to change things to a lighter subject.

"You're having a birthday in two days and I'm only finding out now?" Veronica asked, stepping back and raising an eyebrow. "You'll have to stop by Caritas. I'll buy you a drink and sing a song of your choice."

He shrugged sheepishly. "I can do that."

"Good," she smiled. "Now, since I've effectively kicked your ass, is class dismissed?"

He rolled his eyes, but couldn't keep from smiling. "That didn't count, but sure."

"Because I said so," he said, smiling sweetly at her.
