Lana's Birthday Party: Common Room 4th Floor

A section of the common room was decorated with balloons, streamers and a Happy Birthday Lana banner. A cake sat in the middle of a table ready to slice. Confetti, noise makers and little curls of ribbon littered the two surrounding tables, a third table for presents was decorated with just as much fanfare.

"Phoebe." Maia said coming over to her almost throwing herself into Phoebe's lap as she threw her arms around her.

Phoebe smiled and held tightly to Maia, maybe even hiding her face in her hair for a few moments.

"Hi." Maia breathed into the hug, her eyes shut tight as she held her.

"Hi," she breathed back, just holding onto her for a few moments.

Maia nuzzled into her, safe and comfortable as she always was with Phoebe. "You ok?" she said, her arms still tightly around her.

"No, but I don't want to ruin Lana's night." She always felt relaxed and comfortable with Maia and there was no reason to lie to her.

Maia nodded, she understood. "Later then?" She said with a raised eyebrow though sure Phoebe couldn't see because she was still nuzzled against her. "Should I get Bel for you though?"

"Not right now," she assured her. "But I may need you to later tonight after I say goodbye to Piper."

"Just say the word and I'm there. I'm going to see Susan after the party, so if I'm not in my room I'm there ok?" She said still hugging her tight. She had thought Piper would be staying with the new term, her heart tugged at the news she wouldn't be. Phoebe was alone now, just like Maia, just like Lana.

"I know...I know I'm not your real sister but- well I love you, just like I would love a sister." Maia said in a soft voice. She had never met her sister, Rose. She had been born and had passed away while Maia was 'away'

"You might as well be blood, Maia," Phoebe said softly. "You're just like a sister to me. I love you like you are."

Maia lifted her head and smiled at Phoebe's words. "You've always been my sister. I love you so much." She said in a soft voice, it was choked with emotion. She laid her head back into Phoebe's shoulder and closed her eyes for a moment. "You're one of the best things that ever happened to me at this school. You and Lana both."

"I feel the same way, Maia," Phoebe whispered as she hugged her tightly.

"Don't ever leave me?" Maia said knowing it sounded slightly childish but with Susan leaving and Paige having already left her. Maia wasn't sure how much more she could take.

Phoebe hugged her. "I'll try not to... but they will make me leave someday."

She could feel how Maia was feeling and she understood completely. She had said goodbye to so many people lately that she didn't think she could take anymore.

"Don't leave me, either."

"I won't." She said with a sigh of relief. An 'I'll try' was better then nothing at all.

Phoebe would never make a promise to Maia that she didn't know if she could keep. Maia was too important for that.

"Do me a favor when you see Susan later? Tell her that I think I know what happened and it really wasn't Cole's fault? Tell her we'll find out who did it and make him hurt?"

Maia nodded slowly. "I will." She said with a slight frown. "How are you going to hurt them?" She said chewing her lip.

Phoebe sighed. "It'll probably be other people and not me," she admitted. "Too many people have been hurt this week as it is."

Maia's eyes darkened at Phoebe's words and she nodded. "Yeah." was the only word she spoke. She didn't want Phoebe hurting anyone no matter the circumstance she'd seen Phoebe hurt to much in the last year to want anything but her to be safe all the time.

Phoebe nodded against Maia. "Don't worry. I'm too worried about getting hurt right now to even go near whomever has done all of this. What they've done to all of us is horrible and I just don't think I could be around them right now."

Maia nodded. "Bel will keep you safe yes?" Maia knew she was no match for anything from the magical world, the only thing she could do would be to warn Phoebe and that didn't always work. Magic had a tendency not to appear in her visions.

"Cole won't ever let anything happen to me," she reassured her. "I know he's livid about what happened this week and how hurt I got from..." She swallowed. "But yes, I'll be safe."

Maia nodded. She was quiet, her mind not wanting to register what could have happened all the times in the past if Bel hadn't been there. She stayed very still in Phoebe's arms just listening to her breathing.

"It's okay," she whispered. "I'm here. I'm safe."

Maia nodded against her. The common room was at the moment still quiet before the crowd had really gotten there. What if next time Phoebe wasn't safe though? What if next time Bel wasn't there or Maia didn't see it or Phoebe didn't? What if... Maia swallowed hard and just nodded again.
