Second Floor Common Room [Saturday Morning]

Not wanting to disturb Edward by making lots of noise in their dorm room, Shawn has taken himself and his guitar along to the second floor common room.

He sorted himself some toast, surprisingly without setting fire to anything, and is now lounged out on a sofa strumming away and humming quietly to himself.

"Please let it be music appreciation," Sam sent a fervent prayer upwards towards the ceiling. "But wow, you must really like playing piano, to have been playing it for so long."

Marie smiled. "Yeah, it's relaxing. I've studied ballet for a long time, too."

"I'm so impressed," Sam said honestly. "I don't have an artistic bone in my body. Do you want to go into the performing arts when you're older?"

"I don't know," Marie shrugged. "I haven't really thought much about it. It's just something to do."

"Yeah, if you're good at it, that's great," Sam made a face, knowing where she fell on that spectrum. "And I'm sorry, this is horrible, but I don't remember if we've met. I'm Sam."

"I'm Marie," she replied. "I think I've seen you around, but I can't remember if we've ever talked. I just got here at the beginning of the summer."

"Liking it so far?"

Marie nodded. "I decided to stay on for school," she said.

"That's great!" Sam smiled. "It's kind of strange at first, but the people here are good, and that's important."

"Yeah, I've made some really good friends," Marie said.

"So, you're from the...south?" Sam asked, trying to place Marie's accent. "Where from?"

"Mississippi," Marie replied. "My accent always gives me away. Where are you from?"

"All over, but most recently Colorado," Sam answered. "I w...am an Air Force brat, so we move around a lot."

"That must be hard," Marie said sympathetically. "How long have you been here in Fandom?"

"It's not so bad," Sam admitted, even as she missed her father a little, "but I like getting to know one place and group of people. And I've been here about a year."

"I guess you like it here since you're still around," Marie said. "Did you have a hard time getting used to all the weirdness?"

"Most of it, yes," Sam nodded, "since there aren't any demons or snow monsters or vampires or attacking Jell-o where I'm from. But expecting the unexpected is kind of a hobby of mine, plus I like to think about theoretical scenarios, so it makes the adjustment a little easier, I think. What about you?"

"It surprised me a lot," Marie admitted. "And it took a while, but I don't think there's much that could surprise me now."

Sam smiled knowingly. Sure, Marie said that now..."Well, good. It's important to be mentally prepared."

"Yeah, I think so," Marie said with a small smile. "And I think I'm mentally prepared for whatever this place throws at me next."

"That's great! I'm not sure I'm even close."

"I might be fooling myself."

"Or really well adjusted," Sam tried to be encouraging.

"I'll let you know next time something bizarre happens," Marie grinned.

"If I'm not around, you could just stick a note on the door," Sam teased. "231."
