Dean hauled the bags of ingredients he and Sammy had handwavily bought in town into the kitchen and dumped them on the counter.

"There," he said, turning to his brother. "I think we've got everything."

"I've met a couple of people who were in his class already," Luke said. "They seemed a little shocked to meet me."

Quite the astute observer, Luke Skywalker.

"Well, on Tuesday some of us were still saying goodbye," Aeryn tells him. "Finding out a few days later that he's... gone and has a teenage son is, yes, shocking."

"I'm sorry," Luke said, and meant it.

"Don't be," she says immediately. "It just takes some adjusting. A lot of things do here." Granted, those things usually don't have anything to do with someone dying twenty years ago when you just saw them.

"Like the mimes and the people who might eat you," Luke said, nodding. "I've been learning."

"Um," Aeryn says. "I haven't met most of the new students, but I doubt the administration would allow anyone in if they ate people."

"The guy who told me about it said it happened last year," Luke added helpfully. "That someone tried to eat him."

Aeryn looks wary. "I've been here since last year, and I don't remember anyone nearly getting eaten. Who told you that?"

Luke frowned. "JC Broots," he said finally. "Yeah."

"And who supposedly did the near-eating?"

"I didn't ask. Broots said he'd left."

"Then I'd say you really don't need to worry about anyone else trying it," she tells him. "And if they do... Just tell them no."

"That'll work? Because there was this...thing in the garbage masher on a detention level that didn't seem like the type to answer to a politely worded request."

"Perhaps it didn't understand your language," Aeryn suggests.

"I thought that 'ack, ack, gurgle' was pretty self-explanatory," Luke said, looking thoughtful.

"Or maybe it was just hungry," she admits, and has no idea how they've gotten to this point in the conversation gven how it started.

"Maybe it shouldn't live near the garbage mashers, then," Luke said.

He paused. "Did I forget your name?"

She actually has no idea if she mentioned it. "Aeryn Sun," she says, and is not going to ask why Luke was in a garbage masher.

"It's nice to meet you, Aeryn Sun," Luke said with a smile and a nod.
