Third Floor Common Room, Friday Afternoon

WIth no classes today, the twins lounged in the common room. Hikaru was eatting popcorn and watching the Z FIles while Kaoru sat to the side, making what must have sounded like strange barking as he looked over his Cross Species Communications vocabulary packet.

"That makes more sense."

Walter saw that Kaoru had the same packet he did and nodded toward it. "Is there something I can help you with? I haven't studied Canine before, but I've learned how to learn animal languages, if that makes sense."

"Yea, aren't you the TA?" He migrates over to where Walter is. "Help would be nice."

Walter put the Prophecy books aside and pulled out his own packet. "Yes. I might as well act like one. What's the problem?"

"Pronunciation I guess... this is a lot different than something like French or English." Kaoru flipped back to the first page.

"Well, yes, since the language is made for canine mouths, not ours." He flipped a little farther back in the packet and pointed out a diagram. "And we don't have tails or control of our ears, so we're a little handicapped."

"So that's a big factor?" He flipped to the page he was pointing to and read it.

"Humans can work around it. Some of it is posture. Cat is even more dependent upon subtle things we can't do without their ears, whiskers or tails."

"Oh, so they use more body language? Would we learn to interpret that?"

Walter nodded. "Yes and yes. As humans we'll never be as subtle as a natural speaker, but we can still make ourselves understood and learn to understand."

"I see." Kaoru smiles, nodding while skimming the other pages.
