The roof, Saturday morning

Bel woke up early and headed to the roof for a morning cigarette and to check on his plants.

What the hell, why were they listlessly leaning to the side and strangling themselves with their own leaves?

[ooc: open, natch. I'm here for the next two hours or so then off on a forced march to Antietam for the day.]

"Yeah, I'm new," Seely replied. "Getting there, back home's pretty normal. Especially compared to this place."

Marie nodded. "Yeah, home was pretty normal for me, too. All the magic stuff was really hard for me to get used to. And all the people from other planets." She smiled. "But I got to go to another planet over the summer."

"Like an astronaut?"

"Nope. We went to visit the home planet of our flight instructor," Marie said. "It was really neat."

"You learnt to fly from an alien?"

"I never really thought of him as an alien," Marie said. "He was just from a different planet."

"So he didn't have tentacles and all that, then?" Seely asked.

Marie shook her head. "He didn't look any different than you or me," she said. "Well, aside from his sort of weird hair cut."

"He have a mohawk?"

"No, he had this weird braid thing," Marie said with a shrug.

Seely considered this. "So he was some kind of space hippy?"

"I think it was some kind of religious thing or something," Marie said. "I never really asked. Where are you from anyway?"

"Around," Seely shrugged. "Dad's a cop, he transferred precincts and departments a couple of times, and we went with. Southern girl?"

"Yep, Mississippi, born and bred," Marie confirmed.

"Nice place to grow up?"

"I liked it," Marie smiled.

"That's always good. Liking home."

"Yeah, well, I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon," Marie said, a note of wistfulness evident in her voice.

Seely stuck his hands in his pockets. "Well, I know why I can't go home, but why can't you?"

"Mutants aren't exactly understood where I'm from. And they definitely aren't accepted," Marie said. "Why can't you go home?"

"That sucks," Seely replied. "Stole a cop car, mainly to get at my dad, got sent here instead of juvie. Dad kind of made it clear my name is mud in our house."

Marie grimaced. "That sucks too," she said.

"Gues that means our lives can suck together," Seely offered. "Misery shared and all that."

"Sounds like a plan to me," Marie said.

Seely held up an imaginary glass. "To making sucky lives less sucky."
