Third Floor Common Room, Wednesday evening

Walter was intensely bored. So bored that he was sitting in the common room juggling the hackeysacks he'd picked up earlier at All and Sundries and eating popcorn. The television was tuned to the Hitler Future History Channel for yet another documentary on WWII.

He probably won't bite your head off if you want to change channels.

"What do you do in that club?"

"Apparently, sit around and whine about the Man. In theory, then come up with ideas on how to subvert 'him'. I think Blair thought I was going to start a coup."

Walter laughed. "Why? You asked for specifics instead of just sitting around?"

"And challenged just about everything he said and said that sometimes, the Man is just a scapegoat."

"Blair's not been having the best days lately. How was yours?"

"It was okay, I guess. Nothing really special."

"Nothing special is at least nothing terrible, I'd guess. I went by Aereopagetica yesterday and Giles let me read a book on mirror magic he has there."

"Any luck on Pippi? Togusa and I actually talked to her last night, she seems to think she knows how to get out. Might take a little while, though."

"Nothing useful," Walter said shaking his head. "You talked to her? That's excellent. And if she thinks she can get out, Pippi's someone I trust to be able to do it."

"Yeah. I'm not exactly sure how a chess game is going to work, but she seemed pretty certain."

"Why does that sound logical for Pippi?"

"Because she's Pippi?"

"I can't really argue with that, can I?" For her sake and Pip's he hoped she was out before homecoming.

Which reminded him. "There's some big homecoming event next week...."

"I've heard. . . ."

"And a dance. Would you like to go with me?"

"No."

Walter tilted his head, somehow not buying that answer. "You already have a date?"

"I was thinking I'd go with Pete Hutter," Nadia said with a completely straight face.

Now she was definitely having him on. "I suppose I should have asked sooner."

"Oh, probably."

"Good luck to the two of you, then." He turned his eyes up to the ceiling. "I wonder who I should ask instead... maybe that really tall guy in the band."

"Chad's not bad. But he's far too quiet for you."

"Who would you recommend, then? I haven't been looking around, but I'm sure you could have a good idea."

"Well, I suppose we could make it a threesome. Pete seems interested in that idea. . . ."
