The roof, Thursday afternoon

In order to show the people that she whined at yesterday that she was much better now, kthnxs (and to give Blair a chance to apologize, omg!), Nadia was stretched out at a jaunty angle on the roof with her legs propped up on the edge of Bel's garden, guitar in hands, playing something warm and cheerful at the cool, gray sky.

Shut up. Dar Williams could so be cheerful.

Every now and then she'd pause to partake of the thermos of coffee or box of chocolates she had with her.

Blair blinked and turned, holding his hands out in front of him. "What'd I do now?"

"This is what I'm talking about. I'm not trying to be mean. Just . . . I think we're having a good conversation and then you're offended or calling me names and I don't know what's going on."

"I didn't call you any names, man." Blair said quietly.

"Not this time. You really offended me yesterday, and it came out of nowhere. And this time you're suddenly getting up and walking off. I don't even know what I did this time."

"I apologized for that. Are you still angry at me?"

"No. Well, okay, kinda, but it'll go away eventually. Are you mad at me?"

"I don't think I'm angry. Just upset."

"Well, I'm sorry you're upset. That's not what I meant to do."

"That's...a really lame apology." Blair blinked. "You're apologizing for my feelings?"

"I don't know . . . I'm trying to explain? You really hurt me yesterday, but mostly because it was you saying it. We're supposed to be friends."

"That's what I thought too. I didn't actually call you that until you pushed me, you know."

"You implied it. And I am sorry I pushed you. I don't like reacting that way."

"I don't particulary get a kick out of it either. Don't worry, I'll make sure not to imply things about you from now on."

". . . You had to have thought it. Just to come up with it like that. That I dress. . . ." Nadia shook her head. "I don't even know what I did to upset you tonight. I didn't push you, I accepted your apology, and then you're running off."

"We were talking about stereotypes, not about how I personally see you. There are a lot of stereotypes that I know about that I don't believe." Blair shrugged. "One of the times we talked you said that some people see me as a joke and tonight you said I preach at people all the time."

"Maybe it's true, maybe it's not. But I didn't feel like hanging out and braiding each others hair after hearing it."

". . . I don't want to braid your hair. I'm just saying . . . you have a lot of really good ideas. But you tend to assume what you already know is always going to be right, and that's not true about anybody."

"Why would I protest things if I don't think they're wrong and something else is right?" Blair blinked. "Wouldn't that be kinda stupid?"

"But you're always assuming you're right. And when someone tries to bring up an opposing point of view, you kinda . . . get all weird and stuff."

Blair tried to cross his arms and glared at his cast for a moment when it prevented the movement. "Weird. Nice. Does this apply to everyone or just you?"

"There you go again. I'm just trying to state an opinion."

"I'm sorry if you heard it like that. I said that you get all weird. Look, I don't know what the word I'm looking for in English is, okay? But you . . . close up when I'm not agreeing with you, sometimes."

"Nadia, you told me that you're in a mood and just trying to get me to think about things. But all you do is disagree with me whenever you see me. I never know if you really believe what you're saying or just talking shit. Which frankly, it's a little hard not to get closed up about that."

"It's a Greek method. Devil's advocate. You disagree with what someone says, or keep asking questions about what they're saying, to show them that there are other ways."
