Dorm basement swimming pool: Sunday early evening

Jack was slightly miffed at the weather - was it too much to ask that it do what he wanted? - but he had a fall back plan.

So after a handwavey call to Sam shifting locations, and a quick handwavey trip into town, he'd gone down to the pool to set up a picnic blanket and the food he'd bought.

A dipped toe revealed that the water was toasty warm, and he couldn't resist stripping off his clothes and diving in. Yes, of course he left his swimsuit on. Even if he didn't want to.

"I got your calls," Sam teased, hair a little damp from the quick shower she'd taken after the race. "What's up?"

Jack swam over to the edge of the pool and shook his head, shedding water, then pushed a hand through his hair. "I wanted to see you." He grinned as he looked her over. "Did you bring a swimsuit?"

Sam pulled up the hem of her shirt to show him the black racing tank she had on under it. "Yep. And a towel."

"Well, what are you waiting for?" Jack pushed off the wall and floated backwards, arms outstretched. "The water's beautiful, the food will keep, and the company's excellent."

Sam snickered, although it might have been muffled as she pulled off her shirt and sweatpants, folding them and setting them aside with her towel. She walked over to the deep end of the pool, crouched, then sprang out from the side in a shallow dive that took her almost halfway down the length of the pool.

She surfaced and flopped her wet hair back as she treaded water. "God, this feels good."

"Looks good, too," Jack replied as he lazily drifted over to Sam and trailed one finger across her bare shoulder. "I don't know if we're going to get any more swimming done than we did last time."

"If I wanted to swim laps, I'd leave you upstairs," Sam informed him.

Jack laughed, letting his feet sink until he was treading water in front of her. "You're a wise woman, Sam. But I'll try and control myself, because you're right, this does feels good. Not quite as good as the ocean," he smiled with just a touch of smugness, "but good."

"Very few things feel as good as the ocean," Sam blushed slightly, "but this is good for the moment."

"Yup. And when you get sick of swimming," Jack started to swim in a circle around Sam, "there's warm and hearty food. And coffee."

Sam ducked under the water right in front of Jack, tweaked his feet, and surfaced behind him.

He spluttered, whirled, and grinned evilly. "Oh, it's gonna be like that is it? Two can play at that game," and he dived under the water, reaching for her ankles.

Sam felt the tug, but arched and flipped herself over backwards, spitting out water as her head popped out of the water.

She grinned. "Swim team, high school."

Jack applauded, treading water, then dove down again, going right under Sam's feet, twisting to tickle her toes, and surfaced right behind her.

"Some planet I still don't know the name of," he whispered, lips against her ear. "Aquatic sheep."

Sam laughed, turning around to face him. "No, really."

"Really," he said, laughing with her. "That's how I learned to swim. In the ocean, taught by sentient, telepathic, aquatic sheep. Even I coudn't make that one up."

"That may be the strangest thing I've ever heard," Sam said, giggling as she pictured it. "How old were you?"

Jack smiled a little at the memory, easily treading water. "Fifteen. They kind of adopted me."

"God, you must have been a cocky teenager," Sam teased as she stretched out to float on her back, though she was glad that someone had adopted Jack. "What else did they teach you?"

"Me?" he asked innocently, then laughed again. "Maybe a bit. And not much. I was only with them a month." Jack let himself float, flipping his hands until he was next to Sam, his head near her feet. "And I tell you, getting seaweed out of wool? Is a time consuming job."

She wrinkled her nose. "I can imagine it didn't smell quite so pretty, either." She splashed him a little.

"Hey!" Jack poked his tongue out at her and splashed back. "Yeah, the scent of wet wool isn't something you forget in a hurry." He gazed up at the roof, voice growing distant as he remembered. "They were sweet, though."

"I'm glad you had some sweetness growing up," Sam remarked, flipping her feet and treading water as soon as she was vertical again.

Jack stayed where he was, floating on his back, staring at the ceiling. "They were only sheep," he said softly, then shook himself and turned his head to face her. "But that wasn't why I dragged you down here. Feel like something to eat?"

Sam shrugged a shoulder. "Yeah, I could eat." Which meant she hadn't eaten all day and had only just remembered that.
