The Roof, Sunday Night

Pippi had noted that it had been a while since Pip had played guitar on the roof. And Pippi, indeed, was right.

Pip shclepped his guitar up to the roof, lit up a cigarette, and began to play an upbeat song. Specifically "What I Got" by Sublime.

"Hey, I think the trouble finds us. Teal Dear: trouble magnets. It's kind of fitting, really, for a punk band. . . ."

"All the more reason to go along. Because I never find enough trouble around here." Walter even managed to say that with a mostly straight face.

"That's because the trouble sees you? And if it's smart it runs the other way."

Walter grinned up at her and before lighting another cigarette. "It seems to just go find it's big brother Bad Trouble to come back and give it a go anyway."

"And don't try to pretend that you don't love that that happens."

Fairies, possession, and run amok metabolisms aside, Walter couldn't argue. So he didn't.

"I don't think I've ever pretended that I don't like a good scrap."

"They can be fun. As long as you win."

"Living is winning." And if you died, losing became suddenly much less relevant.

"Not if you're living as a slave," Nadia said, just to be disagreeable. "Though it does mean that you can live to escape."

"Living as a slave isn't winning," Walter agreed, "But it's not the end of the game, so it doesn't count."

Nadia nodded, leaning back and supporting her weight with her good arm as she stared up at the sky for a moment.

"We should spar again sometime, when I'm healed up."

"We should," Walter agreed. "You're fun."

Nadia smiled. "Thanks. You're not half-bad yourself. Plus? I'm pretty sure I can work out any anger stuff on you without injuring you too badly. You're too fast."

"I'm a lot tougher than a practice dummy," Walter said, grinning. "And the harder you go, the better for me."

"Sounds like a plan then. And more constructive than malletting Marty."

"Why would you mallet Marty?" o

Nadia sighed and shook her head. "Because he's a complete and total idiot. Kind of want to hit Veronica, too, but she's too far away."

"You really can't expect me to take that as an answer. What did he do and why are you mad at Veronica of all people?"

[nadiathesaint]

"That's just it, I don't know exactly, but Angela said that Marty went and did something stupid and dangerous to Bel and that Veronica knew it was going on but that they didn't tell anyone, including me or Angela, and considering that the last time Bel was dangerous and those two didn't tell me, I ended up having Agatha build a morality spouting bot to chase after him and almost ended up fireball bait and then got yelled at by them for doing something stupid and dangerous, I think it's about time that I should get to yell at them for it and for keeping secrets as well, since I'm supposed to be, like, their little sister, but they're not telling me anything and I wonder what else they haven't been telling me, and I tried calling Veronica but didn't get an answer or anything so I came up here to calm down and cool off and figure out how I ended up missing, like, hours this afternoon, but that obviously didn't work because here I am ranting about it!"

Then she stopped and breathed hard for a little while, looking annoyed. And breathless. Because that was a really long sentence.

Walter fastened on to one detail out of that rush of details. "You're missing hours from this afternoon?"

Then he went back over his day to make sure he wasn't missing any time, although with the way he'd been staring at his textbooks doing final revision, he wasn't sure he'd have noticed lost time.

Nadia smiled a little sheepishly. "I didn't mention that, huh. I don't think it's a--" she tapped her temple "--thingy because Pippi seemed to notice it, too. I fell asleep in the stairwell and so she was taking me back to my room, but when we went in there, it was suddenly dark outside and nighttime because we were dumb and didn't properly read the subject line of Jamie's post."

"Odd." But Walter felt a little better that Pippi had experienced it too. "I suppose it could just be one of those Fandom things. Or maybe you just slept longer than you thought. But why were you sleeping in the stairwell anyway? The last time I came across you doing that, you'd been drinking."

"We didn't get back to Fandom until 5:30 am. And with my brace destroyed, I didn't get much sleep in the van. I was just exhausted."

Walter didn't quite awww at her, but he wasn't thrilled to think of his exhausted girlfriend sleeping in the stairwell.

"Have you had enough rest now? I could bring you some coffee."

"Yeah, I'm okay now. If I weren't? I'd be taking a nap. But thank you for the offer. I know you'd probably rather get me tea."
