By the Front Gates: 10:30ish [1-11-07]

Lana got out to the gates a little early to be sure she had enough time to stretch out well before she and Conner went running. It was chilly, but all-in-all not a bad day for running.

Lana grinned. "We'll have to hold a sock intervention."

"There's a twelve-step program for that?" Conner asked between snickers.

"Well," Lana said as seriously as she could manage. "We might have to create our own, but I have confidence that we can do it."

"We might be doing tons of people a favor," Conner said solemnly. "Like if the laundry machines ever go on strike again. I mean, even normal laundry machines eat socks on a regular basis. I bet that really upsets some people."

"Very true," Lana agreed. "Who hasn't suffered the pain of sock loss?"

"I'm telling you," Conner insisted, "there's a laundry god with chopsticks who hides behind the dryer."

"I read something somewhere where they said socks were the larval form of wire hangers. You know how there always seem to be more of them every time you look? Well, that's because when socks get old enough they crawl away through the dryer vents and into closets where they metamorphosize into hangers." Somehow Lana managed to get through that whole thing with a mostly straight face.

Conner pulled up in his tracks and stared at her.

". . . seriously?"

It's sad how well that worked sometimes.

Lana burst into laughter and had to stop running to catch her breath. "Maybe?" she managed.

Conner scratched his head, still completely convinced she'd been serious. This was, after all, Fandom. "Now I wish I was taking science this semester, so I could do a project on that."

Lana looked at him, suddenly realizing he thought she was serious. "I'm just kidding," she said a little apologetically. "Although, in Fandom... it just might be true."

"Around here it probably is," Conner said lightly. "Which is probably why I believed it."

"Now that might be interesting to find out," Lana said with a smile. "I wonder how we'd go about finding out."

"High-tech spy cameras planted inside the dryers?" Conner suggested.

"Students with clipboards, probing deep into all the closets, tracking the hangar population?"

"With little radio tags like they put on penguins at the North Pole!"

Lana started laughing again at the image of hangars with radio tags. "Oh God, that would be too funny!"

Conner grinned. "Bet you'll never see that documentary on the Discovery Channel, huh? I mean, can you seriously imagine some guy with a stuffy British sort of accent talking about this?"

Lana laughed even harder. "Maybe we could get the Doctor to do the documentary."

Conner bounced up and down, clapping his hands a couple of times. "Lana, you're a genius," he said. "That would be the perfect Fandom documentary!"

"Oooh, and Abby Sciuto could do a whole forensic study. Do you think hangars and socks have DNA?" She couldn't stop grinning, though she had started off running again.

Conner was so caught up in pondering the DNA question that he didn't realize Lana had taken off without him.

"Hey!" he protested, laughing, and put on a burst of super-speed to catch up to her. "Yeah, I said I wasn't going to do that. You can smack my hand for it."

Lana just stared. "Do that again," she said. "That was totally cool!"

"Do what?" asked Conner, then sprinted about fifty feet down and back in a red blur. "That?"

Lana clapped her hands in delight. "That was wonderful!"
