The Roof, Thursday after classes

River sat on the roof, a bowl of popcorn and a thermos of hot chocolate next to her. Pippi had suggested a "breakup ritual" consisting of "special brownies" and dancing on the roof during cheerleading practise the day before, and it sounded like a perfect idea. River smiled up at the sky, from which the sun peered through the clouds.

[For Pippi, but open!]

Pippi climbed up to the roof with brownies made with handwavy aqquired special ingredients. And a CD player.

"Hey."

River rose from her seated position and pointed at the sky. "Sun's shining," she said, and then added: "And there are brownies."

"There most certainly are." Pippi smiled offering one to her.

River accepted one and handed Pippi the thermos with hot chocolate.

"Perfect brownies," River said with her mouth full. "You made them?"

"I did. With stuff I got from the store and from Jay & Silent Bob."

River hadn't imagined that Jay & Silent Bob would be the people to go to for cake ingredients, but of course these were special brownies. "Special stuff?" she asked, licking her fingers.

"Ya." Pippi nodded. "Just a little bit of special stuff."

River sat down again, leaned back and giggled. "Makes dancing more interesting? Or make me stop thinking too much?"

"I don't know, I honestly can't tell the difference." Pippi said taking a big bite. "I guess you'll find out."

Pippi fiddled with the CD and got it playing a jaunty bouncy tune.

"Do you know how to dance the Schottshe?"

"Yes!"

River got to her feet again. "You lead?"

She felt nicely relaxed and although the music was playing things felt oddly quiet. It was peaceful.

"Okay!" Pippi said helping her up. "Here we go!"

And the two of them started bopping around the roof.

River laughed as they danced, having to concentrate to keep up with the fast music. Concentration proved increasingly difficult.

"Pippi!" River shouted. "I can't hear you!"

"I didn't say anything?" Pippi said, a little puzzled. "And the music's not that loud."

"Your mind," River clarified. "I don't hear it as loudly as usual." She had stopped for a second, catching her breath.

"Oh! Um... That's... Good. Ya?"

River grinned. "For now it's perfect." She resumed the dancing again.

"Yay!" Pippi grins. "And later we should go down to bake with Buffy (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhighdorms/1010015.html)."

"Yes... we... should! Yes... we... should! Yes... we... should!"

Pippi laughed.

"I heard you the first time!"

"But I can hear myself more clearly," River shouted, still dancing.

"You should try singing somethin' then!"

And River sang a longwinded folksong from Osiris. The breakup ritual seemed to be working.

Pippi didn't know the song but harmonized as best she could with a "la la la".

It mostly worked. Kinda.

It worked well enough for River. She took Pippi's hands and danced about.
