Roof, Sunday evening - Memorial Service

While the weather had been snowy all day, the area near Bel's garden was free of snow tonight. The space around the roof held a touch of warmth and there was no wind to blow out the candles that flickered in the dusk.

A table by the door held candles for people to hold and a picture of Bel. Blair had found a fairly decent photo from the time in the cabins and while Bel wasn't exactly smiling into the camera, he wasn't glaring either.

Pip had spent most of yesterday cleaning and ironing his full dress uniform, down to lint brushing the beret.

He stood with an almost unnatural military stiffness, quietly smoking a cigarette as he waited for the service to start.

Nadia had managed to find Moral from wherever Jamie had been hiding it. She put a candle in the glitter spout at the top of the bot, and held it to her chest like a teddy bear, going to stand near Pip.

Pip quietly reached over to Nadia and squeezed her shoulder.

Nadia just kind of stood there for a long moment, before finally leaning slightly sideways and whispering "Hey, can I bum one of those?"

Smoking on the roof in honor of Bel just kind of seemed right.

Pip pulled out the pack and held it out to Nadia.

"Thanks." Nadia lit up, took a drag, and tried not to cough too much.

Pippi took a candle and sat next to Pip.

Pip reached down and put her hand on her shoulder, hoping she'd hold it.

Pippi does reach up to hold his hand, and leans against him besides.

Pip squeezed and taped some ashes from his cigarette off the roof, where the wind grabbed them and spread them out over the campus.

Pippi rests her head on his shoulder and listens to the other people talking.

Walter joined the 502/4/6 crew and Pip and lit a cigarette of his own. For Bel, that seemed appropriate.

His clothes were always just this side of ironed to death, today they were so heavily starched they almost crinkled.

Nadia shifted over to lean slightly against him, not relinquishing her grip on Moral.

Walter put an arm around her and kissed her temple. "How are you?"

Nadia sniffed a small laugh. "Glad I didn't have to find out about Bel by reading it on the radio?"

"Small blessings," Walter agreed. "I see you found Moral."

Nadia looked down at the little bot. "It seemed appropriate."

"It is. You might even have gotten Bel to crack a smile." His demeanor masked his ambivalence about being here, but the service was for the living, and those were people who deserved some way to put the past behind them.

"Actually, he probably would have given me a look and said 'don't you dare let that thing near me, Santos'." This last was said in a rather impressive imitation of Bel. "But he might have been smiling on the inside, or something."

"Aw, he smiled now and then. I saw it." Like when they'd discussed the Heartless Bastards Club. Probably not something to bring up. "Although not when I took pictures of him modeling."

"He modeled?"

Pippi smiled at the crinkly butler.

"Hey you." Walter held out his free arm in an offer of a hug. "Not exactly the best welcome home, but welcome home anyway."

"I knew what I was coming back to when we left." Pippi said hugging him back.

"I show up in full dress and you still out do me," Pip joked.

There wasn't a lot of effort behind it.
