Gym, Saturday, Mid-Morning

Dawn was stretching out in the gym, trying not to be nervous as she waited for Professor Winchester to show up. She considered working out with the weights or running on the treadmill or practicing with the practice weapons, but she didn't know exactly what they were doing and didn't want to tire herself out.

Once she felt sufficiently limber, she reached up and started braiding her hair back, so it wouldn't get in the way while they were working, making sure to fasten it securely at the bottom. Her sturdy black shoes, jeans, and sweatshirt weren't the most stylish outfit she'd ever worn, but they were what she'd be wearing most often when she got attacked got kidnapped was working with Buffy or Mel, so they seemed most appropriate.

So now all she had to do was fidget and try really hard not to think about all the doubts Sam had had about this plan.

"Try to come up with something you can do in a couple of seconds," John advised, "and then practise doing it on the fly until you don't even have to think about it. That way if you do get attacked when you're just y'know out, you can quickly minimise that liability."

"So let's see what you know," John said with a small wolfish grin as he stepped out onto the mats.

John watched her stance for a moment, taking in what was good and what could use improvement. Then he came at Dawn, arms wide, not bothering with much finesse.

There would be time for more complicated attacks earlier. Right now this was about establishing the basics.

John easily blocked her strike at his chest. "Good reflexes," he said. "And excellent recovery. But that probably wasn't the most useful attack you could have made."

"Vampire or not, there's a few certain targets you can aim for that will stop most things short," John said. "And then you can stake them. You got any idea where you should be aiming?"

"Throat's a good choice on most things," John acknowledged. "Knees can be if you hit them just right. What else?"

John raised a hand and pointed it towards his eyes. "I don't think I've encountered anything with eyes that can't at least been slowed down by a finger in them. Or whatever is handy."

"Could you reach Sam's eyes if you had to?" John asked.

"That's probably a fairly safe baseline of if you're too short or not," John said with a faint smile.

"More than two eyes just means more targets," John pointed out. "If you can't find something, look for something else."

"There's nothing wrong with a strategic retreat," John told her. "If you can't be stronger, you can at least be smarter."

[identity profile] demons-death.livejournal.com 2007-03-18 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Part of being smarter is making contingency plans ahead of time. So you're not running away so much as running to something that'll slow down or take out your opponent."

"Like having salt lines preset if you're going after a demon, or, for example. There was a time a few years ago when we were fighting a banesidhe and the boys hid in the rafters of this old barn with balloons filled with holy water. I let it 'chase' me right under them and then it was all over but the splashing and the melting."

"Dean was fourteen at the time, and Sammy was a very precocious though occasionally sulky ten," John explained with a faint smile. "They were well hidden and out of reach with orders not to come out until I gave the all clear."

"Then you have to make the very fast decision whether it would be better to fight or to get away and take it down when you're more prepared."

"Listen to your instincts, your gut. We all tend to know more at a subconscious, instinctive level than we give ourselves credit for. If in doubt, it's best to err on the flight side of the fight or flight response," John told her. "Easier to recover from.

"I can see how that could make someone less cautious. Us merely human have to weigh the odds more carefully."
