Buffy got to the campgrounds early, hauling two huge bags with her. She put them down by the stones of the central camp fire. She looked at it. Firewood. She needed lots of it. She headed off to gather fallen branches and similar.

Slowly everything got set up. There were camping tables with plates, cups and sticks for grilling things with. There were tables with hot dogs, peeps and other grillable things, and a separate table for drinks (so far non-alcoholic).

She set her cd-player on a flat rock, and while it looked tiny and insignificant outdoors, it would at least have music. Hopefully the random showers would stop by night fall, she thought and covered everything with plastic.

Then she walked back to the school and grabbed every umbrella and blanket she could get her hands on, and walked back, dumping everything by one of the tables. With her hands on her hips she regarded everything in satisfaction. Yes. Totally Not Prom was on!

Nadia had never said that she didn't want to talk about it.

She also didn't want to start crying again.

"Okay, then." After a little bit of thinking, she started to play.

Chad was quiet and listened carefully, thoughtfully.

Nadia finished and folded her arms over the top of her guitar, looking into the fire. "Told you you didn't want to hear it."

Chad shook his head. "Nah, I liked it."

"That band's good. They've got a lot of songs about people . . . leaving."

Chad arched an eyebrow at that, but he kept his response simple with just a quiet, Chad-like, "Yeah..."

Nadia let out a long breath that was just short of a sigh. "now. You want a song for you? Or should I play another depressing one?"

Chad gave her a small smile. "Told ya. Play what you want."

"Okay, but when everyone kicks me out for being too emo, I'm going to blame you."

She thought a bit more, then started playing again.

Chad was going to offer that she could just hit them with her guitar if that were the case, but then Nadia started playing, so he just stayed quiet and listened again.

That would only result in a broken guitar. And Nadia would probably need it in the coming weeks.

"Do you want to play some?" she asked, when she was done.

"Sure," Chad said. "Not as good with a regular guitar, but I can try."

Nadia pulled the strap from over her shoulders and held the guitar out for Chad.

Chad took the guitar from Nadia, adjusting the strap, settling it in his lap, taking a moment to get comfortable with its shape and weight. He plucked a few strings and looked at her expectantly. "How about you? Requests?"

"Oh no, you told me to play what I felt, I'm telling you the same thing."

Chad should have seen that coming. Luckily, it was his game, so he was good at it. He played it a lot. And, of course, he went for something happier, something he hoped would effect Nadia a little, and, because he couldn't help it, something with a Spanish lilt. Nothing specific, just his fingers moving as they wanted.

Nadia pulled one leg up to her chest, rested her chin on her knee, closed her eyes, and just listened.
