fandomhighdorms | Totally Not Prom! Campgrounds, Saturday Afternoon to Night

Buffy got to the campgrounds early, hauling two huge bags with her. She put them down by the stones of the central camp fire. She looked at it. Firewood. She needed lots of it. She headed off to gather fallen branches and similar.

Slowly everything got set up. There were camping tables with plates, cups and sticks for grilling things with. There were tables with hot dogs, peeps and other grillable things, and a separate table for drinks (so far non-alcoholic).

She set her cd-player on a flat rock, and while it looked tiny and insignificant outdoors, it would at least have music. Hopefully the random showers would stop by night fall, she thought and covered everything with plastic.

Then she walked back to the school and grabbed every umbrella and blanket she could get her hands on, and walked back, dumping everything by one of the tables. With her hands on her hips she regarded everything in satisfaction. Yes. Totally Not Prom was on!

"Oh, definitely. And if they try anything, we'll emo at them. That's their great weakness."

"I don't emo," Walter said huffily before grinning and kissing her temple. "I broood."

"Okay, you brood, I'll emo, and we'll defeat them in no time."

"Did you know they're both leaving next week?" Walter asked. He wasn't happy at the idea of being the first to break it to her, but didn't really want her finding out elsewhere.

"What?!" Nadia stepped forward and turned to face him. "I knew Pippi had some issues with some woman and some lawyers, but Pip's leaving?!"

"Yeah. Something about a test he didn't pass, and his grandfather's sending him someplace 'tougher.'"

"So he's leaving for good, too?" Nadia's voice was getting tight. "This sucks!"

"I know," Walter said, speaking quietly. "It sucks. The end of the semester is sucking all around."

Nadia was shaking her head. "No, you don't understand, SIDE called, while you were gone. They offered me a deep cover assignment, but I turned it down . . . I didn't want to leave you guys behind, again." And instead, she was being left behind. "It's too late to accept it, now. They wanted to know right away."

Walter stopped as though sucker punched.

She'd... what?

He ran his hands through his hair and shook his head in frustration, stifling a variety of curse words.

"I'm sorry. I didn't want to tell you . . . I knew it would make it harder. But . . . everyone's leaving!"

"God... I'm sorry, Nadia."

Nadia swallowed. "I . . . I think I . . . I'm going to walk. A bit. I'll . . . be back. Later."

Walter pressed his lips together and nodded, blinking rapidly. "Right. I'll be here."

Nadia nodded again, not really looking at him as she headed off.

She returned some time later, looking a bit more centered, if not exactly cheerful. "Sorry about that."

Walter crushed out his cigarette and stood up, brushing bark off his trousers from the log he'd been using as a bench.

"You don't have anything to apologize for."

"I shouldn't have made you feel guilty, like that. Even accidentally. So I'm sorry."

"Nadia..." Walter held out a hand to her. "No lies, remember? Not even by omission."

Nadia took his hand and tugged him forward into a hug. "Yeah. Maybe I'm sorry about that, too. I could have told you before."

"There's been a lot happening." Walter said as he wrapped his arms protectively around her. "We should probably stop apologizing to each other."

"It might make our conversations easier." Nadia gave him a firm squeeze. "I found the Doctor in the woods."

"What was he doing in the woods," Walter asked, not showing any signs of letting her go. "Chaperoning from a distance?"

"Jane left town. He was emo." Nadia didn't object to the not letting go. "He invited me to travel with him, this summer. I'm going to see the whole universe. Not just the world."

So many people leaving...

"I'm sorry the Doctor was emo, but it sounds like an opportunity you'd be a dumbass to turn down."

"And I'm trying this new thing where I'm not a dumbass for awhile."
