Cameron was quietly boggling at the little girl sitting beside him on the couch. At least he'd managed to take off his tuxedo from yesterday and after some major bargaining he had gotten Marybeth to agree to eat lunch on the condition that she got ice cream as dessert.

He had a lot to learn about parenting.

Marybeth nodded and didn't bother telling her it was a toy taser that didn't do any damage. "Yup. My mommy bought it for me. She said I had to learn to protect myself if I'm gonna be a 'vestigator like her when I get big."

"Coooool," Marcie said. "I'm gonna be a gymnast an' a lockpick."

"I bet you're better than your stupid brother," Marybeth said, giggling. "Just like my mommy is better than your daddy."

"I'm a MILLION BILLION times better'n Frito," Marcie confirmed, bouncing. "But my daddy's better than your mommy."

"No way! Girls are better than boys at lockpicking," Marybeth said. "My mommy says so."

Bethie sounded really, really SURE about that. "Maaaybe," Marcie allowed. "But my dad's the bestest boy at it in the world."

"Okay," Marybeth agreed. "But that still means all the girls are better than him! And we're definitely better than Frito!"

And then, because she was kind of forgetting what she was talking about, she held out three fingers and pointed them at Bethie. "Zzzzzap, you're tasered."
