Chupacabra campfire: early Monday morning

Today was the first day of classes. Karal was quite pleased, because having nothing he needed to do felt rather odd.

Not, however, as odd as waking up to see the Valdemaran history he'd been reading nesting next to the bed. And clucking. And apparently quite determined to set on the balled up piece of paper it had found on the floor.

His inability to quite believe what he was seeing - and hearing - didn't seem to bother it.

Karal went into the common area to fetch a cup of tea and returned to find the book chicken had somehow incorporated his pillowcase into its nest. Which made it easy to scoop it up and carry it outside.

Settling it safely against a rock, he - after some fumbling - kindled a fire and sat down to watch it. "How in Vkandis' name are you making those noises? You're a book!"

"They believe they are chickens," Karal replied, watching in bemusement as his spread its pages over its nest. "It's really quite strange." He looked up. "Good morning, Ed. Yours is also behaving like a chicken."

"They all think they're chickens!" Ed said, waving the arm he wasn't holding onto the chicken-book with. "My entire cubicle is filled with chicken-books who want to peck each other!"

He stared at Karal's. "Your book has an egg."

He laughed a little. "It has a balled up piece of paper, which makes a strange sort of sense, given it's filled with pages. I didn't have the heart to separate the two."

"Books shouldn't be thinking they have baby books," Ed said firmly. "They shouldn't be thinking at all!"

"No," he agreed, shaking his head in amazement. "They shouldn't. But if it makes you feel any better, I've been assured that it will pass and they'll be just books again. And I guess we could still read them. Maybe. Have you tried?"

"Yes," Ed said, scowling still. He pointed to the book he'd been carrying. "It pecked me."

Karal covered his mouth to hide a smile. "Well, hopefully it will wear off. Maybe you could scratch its spine, talk to it in a soft soothing voice, and it might allow you to open it?"

Edward stared at Karal for a minute then burst out laughing. "Uhhh, no, that's okay. I can probably go without reading for a day. If they're better tomorrow I might have to try it."

"If it goes on for longer than a day, so will I!" Karal laughed with him. "We may all end up as accomplished book chicken soothers! Not a prospect that holds a great deal of appeal, I have to admit."

"Not at all!" Edward said. "Want to be able to read in peace without the crazy pecking."

"Yes. Books are too important to be turned into things. Or to think they've been turned into things," he amended, still bewildered by the whole thing. "Especially on the first day of classes."
