With his first two workshops moderately successful (the dog kicking question was a trick!) and the books still acting like chickens inside the cabin, Gavin's escaped to outside the cabin.

He's leaning against a log and counting stars. It's better than counting sand.

"Yeah, me too," he said. "Still, it goes in the air. Might be worth flying the stupid thing."

"It might," she said. "If only to say it could be done."

""You flew a lot when you're from?" he asked.

She nodded. 'I'm pretty good. I've done some combat flying, but mostly it's been my dad or a- master's private ships."

"I'm pretty good too," he said and resisted asking if he was still good from where she was from. "I'm still alive, at least."

"That really is the best indicator," she said with a smile.

"And I'm still alive in your time," he said and it wasn't a question. He hoped she'd answer it anyway.

"You are," she said, not giving anything else away.

"It's really hard not to ask, you know," he said. "I could order you."

What? He remembered the 'sir' remark.

"I could not answer," she said. "I'd rather it not be my fault that the timeline gets messed up and have this come back at me when I'm not even born yet where you are."

He thought about that before shrugging one shoulder. "Timelines confuse me."
