Camp gym, Cheerleading practice, afternoon after workshops

Having ~~handwavily~~ called the cheerleaders she knew was here for the first term, and hoping that whatever voicemail they had ran on batteries, Buffy wandered over to the gym carrying a bag filled with sodas. She wasn't really planning for it to be a practice so much as a discussion about the tryouts.

But of course, she was always in favour of a workout!

"Yeah, well, I mean, sure, the rules are different, here."

"Very different," he agreed. "In Karse, women do not do the same things as men. I'm learning that almost everywhere else is different."

"Yeah, dude, that got changed around here, like, last century or something." Warren gave him a funny look. "I mean, there's still stuff that girls wear that guys don't, but that's it."

"We are changing. The old laws said that a woman who took on the habit and guise of a man was a demon, and had to be destroyed." Karal looked down at his hands. "But those are the old ways, and the Son of the Sun is now a woman, chosen by the Sunlord Himself, and I have learned never to underestimate the competence of one."

". . . Okay, dude, seriously, where the hell are you from?"

"Karse," he said with a small smile. "It's in a different world. I'm a priest of Vkandis Sunlord," he added, in case that was any help.

"Is that run by White Wolf? Or, I don't know, Disney, or something?"

Warren was now convinced that he was talking about a role playing game.

And now Karal was confused. "Run by? Do you mean ruled by?"

"Sure, whatever you want to call it."

"All right," he said hesitantly. "The Son of the Sun is the head of the Church of Vkandis and Embodiment of the Sunlord in the World, and so leads Karse. Valdemar, a neighbouring country, is ruled by a monarch, currently a Queen, though the monarch must also be a Herald, else they can't inherit the throne." He paused. "Was that what you wanted to know?"

Not even a little.

"Yeah, sure, that about sums it up. Good to meet you, man."

Karal could tell that his explanation was somehow lacking, but if Warren deemed himself satisfied, he would accept it. "And you," he replied with a smile, though it was more than a little bewildered.

"So. Uh. What classes are you taking?"

"One on Stupid People, one on how to annoy teachers, one on how to steal treasure, and one about building self confidence," he replied. "I've only had the first three, but so far they all seem slightly strange."

"Yeah, tell me about it. I've had all of mine, and they're definitely weird. The stupid people one sounds interesting, though. Maybe I'll take that next time."

"Our first task was to pair up and write responses to nonsensical letters called spam. It was...interesting."

"Oooo, internet spam. That stuff sucks."

Again, strange usage of words he knew, but he was able to puzzle it out. Well, not internet, but he was working on that. "Yes, it truly does. I'm surprised that no one has taken steps to make it against the law."

"Naw, they've probably tried, but it's this whole freedom of speech, capitalism thing. So they're just making filters and stuff for your email. Of course, then you lose your email, or your mom sees porn spam in the filtered folder and gets all mad at you and tells you you're not allowed to use the computer for anything but class work and then she's looking over your shoulder while you do it. . . . You're really probably not interested in hearing that, though."

"No, no, I'm happy to listen if you need to talk," he assured him with a smile. "I'm not sure I understood exactly what you meant," which was a significant understatement, "but I can still listen."

Warren shook his head. "Nah, it's just usual mom stuff, you know? Parents totally just don't get how important social networking is to a modern teenager."

Wondering what most of that meant, he looked over at Warren. "Your mother doesn't recognise your interests as being important?" he guessed.

"Chyeah. Of course she doesn't. She thinks it's all about getting a good education and doing homework."

"Those things are very important," Karal told him. "Though it's as important to allow time for doing those things which are simply for the fun of them."

"Ooo, that's good. That's very good. I'm going to have to use that."
