It was raining out, but Bel was craving a cigarette, so he slipped outside and ducked under the eaves of the cabin, then conjured a fireball to light up. He glanced over at the sign on the door and wondered who had renamed the cabin. Had to be wishful thinking, because he sure as hell had never dressed as a girl, and never would. The manly part, he could live with that.

"Break? Break?" Anders echoed mock-indignantly. "I'm a big boy, you know."

Bel glanced down quite pointedly. "Maybe so," he said. "But you're fragile now."

"I'm on the disabled list," Anders replied, reverting to jock mode. "I'm not fragile . . . what, are you seriously that afraid of me getting hurt again?"

Anders raised an eyebrow, then placed a hand on Bel's shoulder. "Seriously."

"What?" Bel said, lighting up another cigarette.

"You've been really . . . hovery ever since the attack," Anders said, studying his face carefully. "And now you're kind of acting like I'm gonna break really easily. Are you seriously that worried about it?"

"Something wrong with that?" Bel said defensively.

"Nothing's wrong," Anders assured him. "Just didn't realize you'd, y'know, worry that much about me."

"Why would you think that?" Bel said gruffly, flicking ashes out into the rain.

"Think what?" asked Anders. "That you worry, or that maybe you didn't? 'cause . . . I don't know. I know how you feel about Phoebe, but I always sort of just figured with you, at least, I was just . . . along for the ride?"

"Phoebe's my soulmate," Bel said. "But that doesn't mean I don't care."

Anders nodded and kicked at the dirt for a moment, trying to keep from grinning like a big schmoopy dork.

Even though he was one.

"Thanks," he said finally. "For saving my ass, and everything."

Evidently he was taking a few lessons from Bel in that whole being-gruff department.

"I like your ass," Bel said, of course trying to deflect schmoopy into an easier-to-handle area.

"I've kinda noticed." Anders was getting to be a little more fluent in schmoopy-to-Bel translation these days, so he just grinned and kissed Bel lightly on the cheek.

"Call that a kiss?" Bel growled, hand on the back of Anders's neck again.

"Nope," Anders purred, leaning in so his lips just barely brushed Bel's. "That was just the warmup. This is a kiss," he murmured, and made it a damn good one.

"Much better," Bel murmured, kissing him back but holding back from his usual urges.
