Flag Football, Camp Gym - After Workshops

This was the first ever Flag Football information session and practice. John and Molly set up all the necessary equipment in the camp gym. There was a handout by the door explaining what flag football was and the overall rules.

"Gonna play football?" Chad asked.

"Not today," she indicated her shin with a wave of her hand. "But I would like to, if it doesn't interfere with cheerleading." She tilted her head, looking concerned, "You aren't planning on practicing at all, are you Chad? Cause I don't think that would be a good idea."

"No," Chad shook his head. "Jus' checkin' it out for today, but I wanna play an' stuff." Certainly not because he needed to get involved in a sport that reestablished his manlihood after being in cheerleading...not at all...

"Then I'm glad it's not football of the tackling kind," she grinned. Cause Chad tackling anyone was sort of a scary thought. Unless it was a gentle tackle and not of the football kind. Uhhhh.

In Annette's case, of course it would be a gentle tackle. "I dunno," Chad said, a bit thoughtfully because he'd think tackle football would be fun, but, at the same time, he would be worried about hurting someone. So he had a simple solution. "I kinda wanted to start a baseball team."

She was standing there picturing him tackling still, she bet whatever team he was on they would always win. No doubt about it. Blinking away the pictures behind her eyes, she said, "Baseball?" And her hand automatically went to her nose. "That could be...fun. I think I would require a couple hours of practice first. Yes."

"I like baseball," Chad nodded, having actually completely forgotten about that whole incident for the moment, because he was too busy thinking about how good he'd look in baseball pants.

And then his memory caught up with him and he winced. "Oh, man. Remember when you got hit in the nose with that baseball on the roof?"

Because, clearly, the fact that she was touching her nose wasn't indication enough...

"I like it too, actually. I mean I like watching it. Those guys are cute. Most of them. And their pants are so tight and form fitting and makes their bu -- well, nevermind all of that. I think it would be fun to play. I want to wear a pair of those pants and pull my ponytail through a baseball cap."

She nodded, staring up at him, "Yeah, Chad, I remember. I almost bled to death. Okay, at the time I was thinking I was bleeding to death."

He never did tell Teddy about that shirt, either...Chad was going to rewind on that part of their conversation and focus on the good stuff.

"You'd look really cute like that," he said. Meaning the cap and the pants. Not the bleeding to death. Of course.

"You think so?" She knew what he was talking about and she grinned wide. "You'd look pretty good yourself, Chad." Yeah, most definitely. Her eyes fell over him and she pictured him in a pair of baseball pants. "Wow."

Okay, yeah, a 'wow' was a pretty good response. Chad grinned a little, ducking his head shyly and rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah, well...thanks."

That was it. Definitely going to have to look into that baseball team thing...

Hee Hee. It was always cute to see Chad acting shyly. He was so big and impressive that it was just too cute.

"Do you honestly think people around here would want to play? I'd like to be the catcher. Or the pitcher...no, the catcher...or the second baseman."

"Or shortstop?" Chad offered, grinning a little.

She laughed, "Yeah, I could play shortstop and I'm not thinking at all that you are teasing me. I want to slide too. That always looked like so much fun."

"S'got to hurt after a while, though," Chad pointed out, looking completely innocent because why would he ever tease Annette?

"What's got to hurt?" She asked, not getting that sliding would hurt, at all. "I bet I'd make a good umpire."

"All that sliding," Chad clarified, and then made a quick list in his head of what Annette hasn't said she'd be good at yet. It was a pretty short list at this point.

"Oh. Yeah, there is that," she replied thoughtfully. "I wouldn't be a good slider." Hah! Mark that down on Chad's mental list. "Do you know I've never played baseball?"

"Then how would you know if you'd be good at all that stuff you said you'd bee good at?" Chad pointed out.

She blinked, "Uhh, I said I bet I'd make a good umpire? What other stuff are you talking about? I never said I would be good at all that stuff. What stuff, Chad? Oh, because I said I could play the catcher?" Annette was really confused here and a little hurt. Did she come across as being conceited? Vain? Just like Turtle always told her?

"Uhh, um..." And now Chad was confused. Did Annette just say she'd like to play those spots? Could play those spots? Or that she'd be good at those spots? He felt bad if he insinuated that she thought she'd be good at everything. Mentally, he was flailing a little until he thought of something more to say.

"I guess...I guess I just thought you said you'd be good at that stuff because you probably...would...be?" He made a tentative attempt at a save.

She waved her hand a little and looked down, shuffling her foot back and forth, "You don't need to say things like that, Chad. It's okay. I probably did sound like I could do all of that...I just didn't mean it like...like...I just thought it sounded fun, not like I would be any good at it. I would try to do it right, I guess." Annette shut up. She was just rambling to try and justify what clearly came across as arrogance...

She should have just stayed in the cabin. "I think I'll go back to my cabin now. I'm kind of...tired." And I don't want to stand here and end up crying... Turtle was clearly right about her. Annette was a bad person.

Chad's frown grew the more Annette talked. He didn't mean to upset her, but he clearly had and...Annette was amazing! She put up with him when he was being a total dick at the winter carnival thingy! His head ducked. "...Annette, I didn't mean to..."

"No," she said quickly, "it's okay, Chad. I've just been a little over emotional today...I'm sorry. Please don't think bad things about me." Yes, her bottom lip wibbled and she had to blink away the sudden moisture that gathered in her eyes. "Talk to you later, okay? I'm...I'm just a litte...tired." She gave him a small smile and turned and walked away as fast as she could, which was hard because she was still limping.

"Annette!" Chad called out to her, but, if she wanted to go, he'd let her go. Still, he frowned. Why would he ever think bad things about Annette? Maybe if she was having a bad day, he should try to do something nice for her to make her feel better. Right now, though, if she wanted it, he'd give her some space. Poor girl...
