Third floor commoon room, Saturday night

He had been back in town for a couple days and watched his girlfriend leave. This meant one thing: Saturday night vegging in front of the TV with enough popcorn for anyone who might stop by.

Tonight he was watching the Discovery Channel, the big nerd.

"In my experience, they're usually a bit off from normal people," Peter said. "They're kind of messed up in the head, but not necessarily in a bad way. Just in a ... different way."

"How? I've never met one."

"I know one guy who built himself a suit of armor that basically makes him a walking tank, but he's always drunk on martinis. And there's another guy who could probably invent anything he can think of, but he's all stretchy and prefers to do superhero stuff in his underwear instead," Peter said. "Oh, and I hang around on the ceiling all the time."

"On purpose?" Dawn had a healthy, if slightly negative, view of dorky scientist-type boys who wanted to be superheroes and totally weren't. "Doesn't all the blood rush to your head?"

"My body chemistry is pleasantly messed up in such a way that it doesn't," Peter said. "I don't understand how that is, but I'll figure it all out eventually when I have the time and equipment."

"You're going to test your own body chemistry? Should you do that?"

"Not without the proper equipment, but I'd eventually like to understand my powers better," Peter said. "And I don't really trust other people doing that, to be honest."

"No, I totally get that," she agreed, "but you always see people going nuts because they're been experimenting on themselves and going evil and killing everybody." Pause. "Not that you'd do that. I may have read too many comics."

"Oh, no, I wouldn't be experimenting, really. My genetics have been modified enough for my tastes," Peter said. "This would be strictly research on what's already there."

"Have you done any research yet, or are you just kind of winging it?"

"Completely winging it," Peter said. "Once I get to a university or something with the right equipment, though, I'm going to have a field day."

"Is that what you want to be? A scientist?" She asked.

"It would be cool. I've always been a science nerd and everything. But the journalism bug has kind of bit me. Or I could be a superspy," Peter said. "I kind of have a wide range of careers open to me."

"I was a writing geek, until I discovered languages," Dawn nodded, "so I know how it goes. Superspy would be kinda cool, though."

"And not too far off from my superhero thing, either," Peter said. "What about you? Have any big plans for your future?"

Shrugging, she said, "Maybe? I'm thinking about maybe being a Watcher."

"Watchmaking sounds interesting," Peter said. He, of course, had no clue what a Watcher was.

"Oh, no," Dawn said, finally realizing that, "I'd be one of the research people and trainers to vampire slayers, back home."
