The front lawns, outside the dorms: Monday afternoon

Jack had gone for a run. A very long run, down to the beach and back, though about half way through he'd decided he was insane, because it was too damn hot, which was bad timing, because he still had to run back.

Luckily there was a hose he could soak his head with and a nice bit of lawn to stretch out on. Which was what he was doing right now, wearing nothing but a pair of very short shorts, lying on his back while he worked on his tan.

He didn't have to think about his answer, "Yeah, I am. I like people. People are great. Girls are great - I know a lot of great girls."

Jack raised an eyebrow at him. "Yeah, they are. Pretty sure people aren't limited to just girls, though," he said. "Did you have any particular girls in mind?"

"Yeah," he said, "A fact that after coming here I am slowly figuring out." Johnny looked at Jack, matching the brow raise. "Not any one in particular, no."

"Man after my own heart, then. Or my own something," Jack said. "You're only just now figuring out that there's two sexes? Well, on this planet, at least."

"No. I mean yes. I mean...no." Johnny stuttered and looked mildly embarrassed. Grinning a bit, he ducked his head and rubbed his neck. "Just new to me, is all."

Jack's smile got a lot warmer. "I hear that a lot," he said gently. "This place, this time, has a habit of tucking people into these quaint little categories. It can be hard to get over that." He paused, studying Johnny, the corner of his mouth lifting. "Want some help?"

He was nodding. "I'm getting that and I'll admit to feeling a bit overwhelmed by it at times." He shrugged a shoulder, looking at Jack. "I'm not sure what category I'm fitting into and thinking about it is driving me nuts." He paused, wondering about the last question. "I wouldn't refuse it, no."

"I was thinking of the practical kind of help," he clarified, leaning closer to Johnny, smile slowly turning back into a smirk. "But if you want advice, the best I can give is forget about categories."

"The practical kind of help is best. It's what I was thinking of, really," he said quickly, feeling stupid for letting his mind wander. Think he was going to blame Isabel for that. Or Ronan, or both. Dammit.

"Definitely going to do that, Jack. Definitely. Thanks, man."

"Practical help is what I'm best at." Jack very lightly traced a finger along Johnny's knuckles, testing his reaction. "Think you can find room 215? I think what you need is a chance to," he smiled wickedly and met his eyes, "experiment. With someone a little bit more experienced, who won't put any pressure on you."

Johnny didn't move but he glanced down at Jack's finger as he traced the back of his hand. Then he met his eyes. "Yeah, I can do that," he heard himself say before seriously considering it. Not that that was a bad thing; just different for him despite the few times he'd been with Ronan.

"That is a good answer. Trust me, you won't regret it." He let his hand rest on top of Johnny's, just briefly, then pulled it away. "Later this afternoon? There's no time like the present and all that."
