Shooting Range: Tuesday Afternoon [after workshops]

The first thing Jack did upon entering the Range was post the Safety Rules:

SAFETY RULES:

· TREAT ALL GUNS AS IF THEY WERE LOADED

· KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO FIRE

· BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT’S BEYOND

· ALWAYS WEAR HEARING AND EYE PROTECTION

· NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILE SHOOTING.

· CHECK IN ALL WEAPONS BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE RANGE.

He might have posted them with a little more care than he usually did. And, for once, he didn't immediately grab his guns. Instead, he spread his arms wide and said, "Welcome to the Shooting Range. What do you think?"

"Different," he said again. "I only use one hand when I do magic."

"You can shoot one handed. I do, sometimes, but it's not as secure, not as strong." He studied Cedric's hands, and nodded. "Different bad, or just strange?"

"I'm just not used to it," he said. "That's all. Will the recoil disturb the position I'm in when I shoot?"

"When you shoot, you'll keep a firm grip, and the way you stand will help absorb it. Your hand shouldn't move except to squeeze the trigger. And don't anticipate the recoil, it'll make you react before it even happens," he explained, then paused, before adding, "You can dry fire it if you want. See how it feels."

"Not yet," he said. "I'd just like to get used to it a little more."

He dropped the stance, waited a moment before setting himself back into the stance, easier than before and less tense.

"Take as long as you want, Cedric." Jack relaxed, one arm lying along the back of the bench, behind Cedric, happy to watch him. "There's no pressure here."

"I might end up shouting a spell once or twice," he said, amusing himself while he got used to the weight and heft of the weapon.

That made Jack laugh, and he shook his head. "That would be a new one for me. Just don't let it spoil your stance, and I'll be a happy Jack. What would you shout?"

"Stupefy," he said. "Or Accio. Those are two of the more common spells I've used."

"Stupefy," he frowned, "stops people from moving?" he guessed. "And I have no idea what Accio does."

"Stupefy is the stunning spell," he said. "Accio retrieves objects. If I said Accio paper target, the paper target would come to me."

"Yes!" Jack snapped his fingers in realisation. "I've seen that one. You showed it to me, out at the cabins." He grinned. "I was distracted, so I didn't really pay attention to what you were saying."

"Distracted by what?" Cedric asked, laughing.

Jack's grin turned into a smirk. "Guess."

"Was someone shirtless at the time and they caught your eye?"

"You weren't shirtless. I'd remember that." He prodded him lightly in the shoulder. "Somehow you manage to be that distracting when you're fully clothed."

"Then how did I distract you?" Cedric asked.

"Magic, and it was you doing it." Jack shrugged and smiled, resisting temptation and keeping his hands where they were - this was not the time to distract Cedric. "Deadly combination. How are you feeling about it now?"

"All right," he said and lowered the gun carefully. "I don't know if I want to shoot today. Could I watch you?"

"Yup. I don't want you doing anything you don't want to do." He held out his hand for the gun. "Sure you won't be bored?"

"I'm not going to be bored, " he said and handed the gun carefully to Jack.

It was automatic to pull back the slide and check, even though he knew it was empty, and he grinned as he did it. "No, you won't. Okay, safety gear back on, and you can pick an alley while I grab mine," he said, hopping to his feet and heading for the lockers.

Cedric slid the ear protectors back over his ears, put the glasses back on and then picked an alley at random.

Jack strolled back, wearing ear protectors and safety glasses, and carrying his gun and a handful of clips. "Good choice," he said and hit the button, moving the target further away.

"Should I stand back? Give you some room?" Cedric asked, not wanting to crowd him.
