4th floor common room, Monday Afternoon

Neville was trying to spend as much time out of his room as he could. Hermione had cast a protective spell on Trevor, so he would probably be all right, but just in case his room mate got mean, Neville had put Trevor in his cage and taken him with him to the common room.

It didn't look half as inviting as the Gryffindor common room, he decided and looked around. It didn't even have a fireplace!

There were lots of interesting muggle things though. He put Trevor down on the table and went to study the big black box curiously. He couldn't figure out what it was for. Some sort of mirror?

Rodney looked like he wanted to be taking notes. "Trip. Fun. Family. Missed her," he murmured to himself and ticked the points off on his fingers. "Right, good. Okay, I can do this." He wondered what John would do if he said he'd missed him more.

"That's right. It's easy," John smiled, patting Rodney on the shoulder. "Where'd she go, anyway?" Seeing as how she obviously didn't know what she had.

Rodney was reassured by the pat on his shoulder and he leaned into it. "She did go to visit her family, actually. Or maybe just her grandfather," Rodney wasn't entirely sure. "So, uh, how are things with Jaina?" He asked jealously.

"She told me she likes my sense of humor when we went flying the other day," John said proudly. "So, good, I think."

Even though it would be even better to hear something like that from Rodney.

"Oh, well, that does sounds good," Rodney said. "Before you know it you'll have a girlfriend too." He smiled at John. But internally he was screaming that he thought John had a wonderful sense of humor and he was probably the only person who could really appreciate John's intelligence as well as his more obvious attributes. "A sense of humor is important to girls, right?"

"I think everyone likes a good sense of humor," John said. Avoiding the girlfriend comment because he really just wished Rodney would notice him. "I know I appreciate someone who can make me laugh."

"Good point," Rodney nodded. He wracked his brain trying to remember if he'd shown enough humor around Charlie or if that was something he needed to work on. John certainly laughed a lot when he was with Rodney. And Rodney was pretty sure that it wasn't all directed at him. That had to mean that John, at least, liked his sense of humor. But apparently not enough to want to date him. It was really too bad as that would have been so much easier.

"So, are you looking forward to classes?" John asked, after Rodney seemed to just sit there staring off into space. What John would give to be the focus of that blue stare.

"Hmm... oh, yes I am, actually," he replied as he pulled his thoughts away from daydreams about dating John his sense of humor or lack thereof. "The math class probably won't cover anything new but I can always use it as review, I suppose. Ethics and Communication should be interesting, but I'll probably sleep through Modern Feminism. What about you?"

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm in Art 101, US History, Communication, and Ethics," John said. "Ethics might be more than interesting as Jaina's in it and it's taught by her grandfather." If only Rodney had asked him out instead of Charlie.

"Oh, cool. We have two classes together," Rodney grinned. He wished that John's almost girlfriend wasn't going to be in one of them. They probably wouldn't even be able to work together if she was always going to be around. Damn. Damn damn damn.

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
"We'll have to partner up at some point," John suggested. "Why did you take the feminism course? I'd only do that to meet chicks." Not that he needed a chick when Rodney was around.

[identity profile] mrodneymckay.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Definitely. It's a date date," he agreed. "Honestly, that is why I signed up for it, but that was before things with Charlie became official. Guess I'm stuck with it now," he shrugged. Though he would much rather be stuck with John. In any definition of the word.

"She's not worried you're going to find another in class to woo with your manly appeal?" Other than me!

[identity profile] mrodneymckay.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
"We hadn't actually talked about our new classes before she went on vacation. Do you think that will really be a problem? Even aside from the whole cheating issue, it's not like I'd try to hit on you anyone else, even if I was interested in you, which I am, someone. It'd be pushing my luck quite a bit to try to find two people on this island who might be interested in me romantically," he said self-deprecatingly. "Frankly, I'm still amazed there's one." Damn, why couldn't it be you?
