River looked up at the sky. Once it got dark enough the stars would be visible. She smiled. That would be decoration enough. The music was already playing and she tooka a few dance steps, then spun around, closing her eyes.

Still, to be a proper party there was a few other things needed, and River had made sure they were there. Buffy had let her borrow the CD-player they used for the cheerleader practice, and Isabel had brought a large collection of CDs. River herself had provided snacks, mainly the kind bought from a shop, and had mixed a non-alcoholic punch.

From somewhere a few bags of glitter had appeared, available for anyone who needed it. River frowned, then shrugged. She placed the chair she had promised Adah next to the stairs, hoping that she would brave the long climb up to the roof, and put a blanket on top of it.

[Up early because I'm in a timezone that makes me want to go to bed before everyone else. Everyone's invited to party and dance. ~~Wait for OCDs!~~ OCDs are up!]

"Very dead," she nodded. "Cut down, cut off, and mocked mercilessly. I think sharks have more compassion."

"Personally? I've found that I like nerds. Hell, I dated one most of last year."

"Really? Who?"

Claire pouredherself a glass of the punch as she talked.

"My best friend at home for the last few weeks was a film geek. He was so much nicer than the popular crowd. Even ran my Homecoming campaign behind my back."

"He's not here any longer," Isabel said, grateful that she'd reached the point where she could smile at the memories. "We broke up in March and he had to go home when the semester ended. But his name was Greg and he was a sweetheart. He was really into chemistry and he had the wildest hair. The scary thing was he styled it that way intentionally."

"He did? Did you win?"

Claire surprised herself when she smiled. It was still a relatively sad smile through the eyes, though.

"Turned out the unpopular kids outnumbered the popular kids. Zach said I won the 'freak vote'."

"You won. Proving that freaks have good taste. And I'm willing to bet that you winning caused several noses to be put so far out of joint that they probably needed a plastic surgeon to put them back in place," she observed.

[RL calls. Back in about 2-2.5 hours.]

Claire then found her smile hard to keep in place, so she covered it by drinking.

"Mmm hmm," she muttered into the cup.

"Are you okay?" Isabel asked. "Do I need to get the glitter out?"

It was light and teasing, but Isabel certainly understood all about missing people.

Subject changes were always good. "So what classes are you taking?"

"Invasions and Protection," Claire replied, waving away the need for glitter with a quickly faked smile.

There wasn't a theme there at all.

"What about you?"

Theme? What theme? "Keeping Your Wits, Alternative Tactics, and then, just for the hell of it," she said with a sheepish grin. "Fandom's Next Top Runway Model."

Claire laughed.

"Will you be putting on a show for the rest of us?"

Isabel nodded, pretty resigned to it now. "More then likely. But there's a whole lot of pretty in that class. So it makes it all worth while."

"There are some sacrfices we must all make for pretty," Claire said solemnly.

"And some are well worth making." Isabel pointed out Lee Adama. "He's one of the guys in the class. He has very nice arms."

"Yeah?"

Claire gave Lee's arms as thorough an appraisal as she could without embarrassing either of them.

"Does he know you think he's got nice arms?"

"If he doesn't? I'm sure people have told him by now." She realized a little background was in order. "There used to be another version of him here when I first came here. The running joke was about how wonderful his arms were. Knowing the people in this school? I'm sure someone told him within ten minutes of him arriving here."

"Ooooh."

Claire nodded, smiling in slight embarrassment.

"OK, I didn't know that."

"Yeah, I'm not sure what happened to him. I think he got called home suddenly," Isabel told her. "He was a nice guy. He came from the same planet as Anders. I haven't talked to this one yet. Hopefully he's as nice."

"That's one thing to keep in mind about a good number of the people here. They're not shy. They'll tell you just about anything." She chuckled thinking of the number of times she'd had to shout TMI.

"Beginning to notice," Claire admitted. "I'll just bear it in mind."

"I'm generally okay until I start hearing details about people's sex lives," she laughed. "Then I either hit them or run screaming from the room."

"Avoided that one so far," Claire said. "Luckily."

"Lucky you," Isabel said dryly. "There are some things I really wish I could unlearn."

"I'm going to head over and grab a soda. Catch you in a bit?"

"Sure,"Claire said. "Later!"
